Window not working

When i close my front door on the drivers side it sounds like my window is vibrating and not working?....is that normal? well im sure its not...but why is it making that vibrating sound?

The window controls don't work on the driver's side door. They do work on the other three doors. I used to be able to make them work if I lightly pounded on the armrest where the controls are located. Today, not even that worked. Do you have any ideas what could be causing the problem?

Hi Honoris,

Either the switch is bad or the motor has failed. Previously vibrating the door could have judderred the motor or switch into working but now it has failed completely.
To test the motor, remove the door panel and disconnect the motor. Apply battery voltage to the motor to see if it works.

Electrical problem

Out of 4 power windows, Driver side power window do not slide up / down upon the operating the control.

Currently it is at close position. Could someone tell me, what has malfunctioned, & what could be the approximate cost to repair?

First read this tutorial on how to test the window switch and motor: https://www.2carpros.com/how_to/power_window.htm

If you're not getting power to the switch, then check the fuse and wiring. If you get power and the switch works, then remove the motor from the regulator and push the switch in each direction (with the motor still connected to the switch). If the motor turns then you've got a stuck regulator, if the motor doesn't turn then the motor or connection to the motor is bad.

The switch is only $22
0.3 hours to replace but you could easily replace it yourself.

the motor is $300, plus an hour labor

the regulator is $66 with a 1/2 hr labor

Can you hear the window motor operating in the door when you push the button? If so, the window is probably broken off of track. If not, check out the fuses.

my power window won't go all the way up. it will go all the way down, but only about a quarter of the way up. any ideas?

You probably have a binding window regulator cable. Remove the door panel and you'll see a metal slide attached to the window motor. It may look like a scissors jack depending on what type of regulator you have. check for binding in the regulator, move it up and down manually with your hand. Be careful not to let the regulator drop, you might smash the glass. Try lubricating the track, it might correct the problem. Also look for anything visibly stuck in the track

My front driver's side power window got stuck in the down position this morning. I managed to get it back up by pulling on the window and the power button at the same time. As the window went up, I could hear a clicking noise.

I would like to try and repair this myself. The research I've done so far tells me that the problem is the motor or the regulator. My guess is that it is the motor; how can I tell for sure which part needs to be replaced?

Hi there,

you will have to remove the door trim and disconnect the window from the regulator, (normally 2 or 3 bolts) there will be a position to move the window to, to access these bolts, the regulator will unbolt from the door frame with the motor attached remember to unplug the harness, inspect motor and regulator for fault.

When you say that I will need to remove the door "trim" are you referring to the plastic door paneling or the rubber trim around the door frame? Can I remove the bolts with a socket wrench?

Hi there,

The trim refer to the plastic inner trim, door handles, arm rest if fitted, there is no need to touch the rubber weather seal on the door, There are different methods of removing trims, for fitting look for small screws they may be covered with caps, the trim panel will be clipped on, (there may be some screws as well) a careful inspection will show. You must be careful as the trim can be damaged if handled to roughly, if unsure get you mechanic to remove trim for you.

What is the difference between a window regulator and a window motor? The problem is that my driver side power window had been slow to roll up for some time and just recently completely stopped going up. Could it been a window motor, regulator or master control switch? When you attempt to roll it up using the switch it doesnt do anything. There is a major price difference between these three items so i want to make sure I'm getting the right one. Thanks so much.

Hi there,

The window glass is attached to the regulator, which is the mechanism that controls the movement of the window up and down, the window motor is a reversible electric motor attached to the regulator which drives this device up and down. Normal failure is a tight regulator or sticky bailey channel (the rubberised channel the window slides in) that over load the motor and burn it out. All three components will have to be inspected for problems, before repairs can be made.
