I have a whining noise that is in the engine area. It started about 1 1/2 years ago and is getting louder all the time. Have changed the alternator, changed both belts, and checked the pulleys. I have been told that it is coming from the timing chair but I don't know about that, especially the 1800 dollars to have another put on. Beside, I didn't know that you could hear any noise from the timing chair until it broke or got really bad. When you speed the engine up, the whine speeds up too. It sounds like the alternator going bad but that has been changed.

What do you think about where the noise maybe coming from?

Thanks.

remove your belt and start the engine if it 's still there it's probably the chain and related parts.

had kinda like a grinding noise brought it to mechanics they said was water pump so i told them to do it along with timing belt kit...now since then i have a whining noise virtually around the same area and they cant figure it out so the losened the timing belt tensioner a tad and cleared up some but still have it between 1.3 and 1.7 rpms once it goes over 1.7 rpm you dont hear it again till you deccelerate to about the same rpm speed..what can be the problem or is it still the timing belt tensioner to tight??all other pullys seem good to them...belts good as well

It very well could be that the belt tensioner is too tight. Here is the procedure for tightening it:

Use an Allen wrench to turn the timing belt tensioner 70-80 degrees clockwise and tighten the timing belt tensioner nut to 32-43 ft. lbs. (43-58 Nm).
