car in drive and it starts slower than usual

What does it mean when I put the car in drive and it starts slower than usual and makes very loud engine noises? I put the car into drive and it starts operating very slowly, slower than usual and on top of that it sounds like a gigantic laundry machine. This has never happened before and it takes me several tries to mess with the car until it sounds and run normally.
