You can't fit a pull type clutch in place of the push type, you will have to get the correct clutch kit.

Here are the directions for replacing the clutch disc on this vehicle. The attached pictures correlate with the directions.

COMPONENTS

REMOVAL
1. Remove the transaxle assembly.
2. Insert the special tool (09411-11000) in the clutch disc to prevent the disc from shifting.

3. Loosen the bolts (Gasoline: 6ea) which attach the clutch cover to the flywheel in a star pattern. Loosen the bolts in succession, one or two turns at a time, to avoid bending the cover.

NOTE: Do not clean the clutch disc or the release bearing with cleaning solvent.

INSPECTION
CLUTCH COVER ASSEMBLY
1. Check the diaphragm spring end for wear and uneven height.
2. Check the pressure plate surface for wear, cracks and color change.
3. Check the rivets for looseness and replace the clutch cover assembly if necessary.

CLUTCH DISC
1. Check the clutch facing for loose rivets, uneven contact, deterioration due to seizure, adhesion of oil, or grease, and replace the clutch disc if defective.
2. Measure the thickness of the disc rivet sink.

3. Check for the torsion spring play and damage and if defective, replace the clutch disc.
4. Clean the splines on the input shaft and install the clutch disc.
If the disc does not slide smoothly or if play is excessive, replace the clutch disc and/or the input shaft.

CLUTCH RELEASE BEARING

CAUTION: The release bearing is packed with grease. Do not use cleaning solvent or oil.

Standard grease: CASMOLY L9508
1. Check the bearing for seizure, damage or abnormal noise. Also check the diaphragm spring contacting points for wear.
2. Replace the bearing if the release fork contacting points are worn abnormally

CLUTCH RELEASE FORK
If there is abnormal wear at the point of contact with the bearing, replace the release fork assembly.

INSTALLATION
1. Apply multipurpose grease to the spline of the disc.
Grease: CASMOLY L 9508

CAUTION: When installing the clutch, apply grease to each part, but be careful not to apply excessive grease. It can cause clutch slippage and vibration (shudder).

2. Install the clutch disc assembly to the flywheel using the special tool (09411-11000).

3. Install the clutch cover assembly to the flywheel and temporarily tighten the bolts one or two steps at a time in a star pattern.

4. Remove the clutch disc guide (09411-11000).
5. Install the transaxle assembly to the engine.

trans ready to be removed will not slip out more than a half in seems ae if a spring is holding it what do i need to do?

Although i have not had to do one yet on the 2005 models, I know of no reason why this shouldn't slide out if all if the normal attachements are removed. Unless itisn't being pulled out square to the shaft or something came apart in the clutch, it should slide out.

I haven't been completely sure, but lately I think I've begun to feel my clutch slipping, and then last night my car rolled about 8 or 9 feet backwards down the driveway while in 1st gear. Am I correct in assuming that this a clutch issue? And if so, can I do the job myself?

Sounds like you have air in the hydraulic lines for the clutch. Attached is a procedure to bleed the clutch system.

Last Saturday I took my car to get an oil change. I get all of the car work done at the dealership. I did not drive much on Sunday. Monday morning on my way to work I had problems getting the glutch into 1, 2nd 3rd or 4th gear. Is it possible to tamper with the clutch? If not what do you think the problem is and what should I tell the machanic at the shop.

Hi there,

check that the clutch fluid is not low, this would indicate a leak in the system and if so air may be trapped and that will give you a poor clutch operation, this is the most common cause of this type of clutch problem.

YouTube only has instructions on a 2003 model Elantra clutch replacement. Is 2002 the same as 2003 to replace the clutch?

They are almost exactly the same.
