Hi!
I have 2 questions....my Honda dealership is always trying to get me to have "check-ups" for the car...like 60,000, 80,000....are these really necessary...they cost so much? Over 300 dollars.....
And about a year ago I bought a set of tires (4) for my car since I would be traveling more, informed the dealer about traveling more...so he said he put on tires for "performance"...well they seem to ride sort of rough and are loud....very annoying while driving is that normal? I drive approx 240 miles /week for work. I have had the tires rotated and checked....on required basis.
Thanks for your help.....

Hi there,

Regular servicing is a good idea but not mandatory and can be done by an independent work shop and not a dealer this will reduce the cost, as for the tyres , if you feel that they are over noisy get a tyre retailer to drive and advise you first hand.

I am replacing my spark plugs but can't get access to the plugs on the back side of the motor. The 3 on the front side of the motor were easy. The plugs sit deep into the shaft and it is very difficult to get my wrench and long socket into any posiiton where I can get to the 3 remaining spark plugs. Any suggestions?

The easiest way to access them is from under the car. If you don't have access to a rack, lift the car high enough, use jack stands to make sure it is safe, and thentry to get them from under the car.

If you have access to a rack, it will make your life much easier because it still may be hard to access them if you are on your back.

There is no way to get to the plugs from under the car. They are on the top side of the motor, close to the firewall.

Here is a complete guide that will explain this:

https://www.2carpros.com/articles/how-to-tune-up-a-car-engine

Also here is a video of changing plugs on a similar vehicle:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k1KGussrTJA

I also attached the info below from the manual that will show the detail about the spark plugs and the location to remove and install them.

Let us know if you have more questions. Thanks

Hi tdstrdi,

Tuneup parts are usually spark plugs only. However the plug wires, distributor cap and rotor should be checked as well. Oil chage if necessary.

From the symptom description, I doubt a tuneup would help. Symptoms indicates a more likely ignition coil fault.

My 2001 Accord burns lot of fuel and won't pick up speed. It gives only 20Mile/Gallon under 60miles/hr, If over 60miles/hr the gauge suddenly fall down. What comes in major tuneup. Thanks.

Hi zafsyed,

Guess you would have to do a major tune up and checking.

1. Spark plugs, wire, distributor cap and rotor
2. Air filter.
3. Fuel filter.
4. Valve adjustment
5. Timing belt? if it had not been replaced, it is long over due.
6. Transmission fluid.

Thanks for your kind advise.

Everything sounds good for major tuning, but what does spark plugs, distributor wires and rotors do in fuel consumption?

Plugs help ignite the fuel when you start the car that's it.

Thanks.

Hi zafsyed,

If the spark plugs are not functioning well, it would result in loss of power from which you would need to push harder on the accelerator and more fuel would be injected.

Honda Acccord 2000 v6
Changed oil 7/26/07

mileage: 108k

Your tune-up directions are too difficult. I can change tran gasket, oil filter, spark plugs, and air filter.

Dealership told me that I need to:
flush out brake fluid and power steering fluid, how?

My car runs okay, what is necessary right now for a 108k Honda Accord (tune-up)? I can do some things if it's not too heavy.

Mechanic told me to change my AC filter so my exhaust won't smell so bad. truthful?

Right now just change the plugs, wires, fuel filter, air filter. Also (depents on the condition) the distr cap and rotor. Succes with your tune-up, not so difficult

Check the belts for wear and cracking. Did they do the timing belt replacement yet? I wouldn't worry about flushing the brakes and power steering. The A/C filter. It is not about the exhaust but what it allows inside the cabin with you. I am going to email you a section on the replacement of the filter for future reference when and if you decide to do it. It also covers a lot of other areas as well. Good reference materials.

Bruce,
I just joined the forum, and your post was one of the first that I read. I also have just purchased the 2000 Honda Accord V6 and would like a copy of the reference materials that you offered to email to the previous poster. It would be greatly appericiated. I have so many questions about this car that I need the reference material to look at things before I can even post a question on the forum.

So any help would be greatly apperciated. Also, I'm not sure if you can get my email from the forum info. If not please respond to the post and I will post it as soon as I can. I would like to keep it private however.

Thanks for your time.

Engine Mechanical problem
1999 Honda Accord 6 cyl Two Wheel Drive Automatic 213k miles

I bought my accord nearly year ago, for 3.8k.
I have since put new transmission in it, and am not considering tune-up that is necessary. I am a poor grad student trying with tight budget but would want this car to last another 100k at least. Can you give me the recommendations for tune-up. I was told the timing belt is non-interference, and the valves don't need adjusting. Lately the ideling seems to be bit off (shaking a little). I was wondering if that would be spark plugs (I was given quote over $100 for spark plugs - platinum - that i thought unnecessary). I have quotes for timing belt and water pump alone at $650, and dealership wanting $950 for tune up (additional $500 for timing belt).
Any help in what you would consider top priority would be recommended. I only have been driving local, but will be driving long distances (9hrs away) more regularly due to relationship.
Thank you for your insight.

You do not need platinum tipped spark plugs. Copper core (about $2-$3 each plug) is all you need. Make sure you get NGK though.

The timing belt would also be a good idea, however, if it snaps on you, your engine will be safe, so you can prolong the service for a tad longer, but not another 100k

Hi there,

If you are not having any real problems, i would just be doing the air & fuel filter and get a scan to check for any unresolved fault codes, i would also check the valve clearances and the timing belt will be due at 210K so if that has not been done i would be doing this as well.

My neighbor just did a tune-up, replaced the timing belt, and water pump on my 1999 Honda Accord EX. The first time I drove it minutes after the tune-up, from inside the car, the engine noise is louder (ONLY WHEN I ACCELERATE) than it's ever been, even after my last tune-up. It's not horribly loud, but loud enough to notice that it's not like it was before. Maybe it just has the spunk now that it's been missing? I don't think it's an exhaust leak, which kind of sputters with the purr of the engine. This is no different noise, just louder, like I'm starting to wind it out...can anyone help? Thanks, Laurel

It is very hard to trouble shoot a sound. Especially if you can't hear it. But hear are a few things you can think on. Does it seem to be a knock or a tapping noise. A tapping noise is usually valve noise. It is usually caused by loose valve adjustment or a defective valve train part. Low oil pressure will cause hydraulic lifters to make a tapping noise. The fact that a new timing belt has been installed we must consider the possibility of improper camshaft timing. Does this noise get louder under a load and or when it is cold? Does it sound like spark knock? Does it get louder when hot and under a load?
Excessive main bearing clearance usually heard as a heavy thump. Excessive rod bearing clearance is usually heard as a heavy rapping noise that matches engine speed.

Good Luck

I should have been more clear...there is no BAD noise to identify. It is just a louder volume of engine noise as I accelerate. Runs fine, I just hear more engine than I remember ever hearing. No knocking, or tapping, just like I lost my muffler, but not that extreme. Thanks for your help.

I replaced a head gasket on a 98 accord, four cyl., new timing belt with a rebuilt head. When finished the engine idles rough and dies. The diagnostic says fuel lean and rich, ramdom misfire, cyl #1,2,3 misfire, and knock sensor cir fault. This sounds like a lot of business, can you simplify please. Stan

It sounds like an O2 sensor is going crazy or you have a vacuum leak. Have you checked them? Also, make sure you didn't pinch any wires forget any vacuum hoses.

you will need a air filter, a fuel filter, add some fuel injector and system cleaner in tank.

change the oil. lubricate the front end. check and top off the fluids. or change if nedded. check the brakes.

Hi babygirl2003, Apart from the normal oil changes and spark plugs and inspection of components, etc the following are recommended.
