Good morning,

I attached the procedure for replacing the key. Since it will not turn to the on position for removal, you will need to drill out the pin for the release of the cylinder.

https://www.2carpros.com/articles/ignition-switch-wont-turn-stuck

If you call a locksmith, they will come to you and repair it on site.

Roy

IGNITION LOCK CYLINDER REPLACEMENT

Removal Procedure
1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.

Caution: When performing service on or near the SIR components or the SIR wiring, the SIR system must be disabled. Failure to observe the correct procedure could cause deployment of the SIR components, personal injury, or unnecessary SIR system repairs.

2. Disable the SIR system. See: Air Bag(s) Arming and Disarming > Procedures
3. Lower the hush and knee bolster.
4. Remove the steering column trim covers.
5. With the key installed, turn the key to the RUN position.

Hi,

I believe you will need to remove the ignition lock case. Take a look through these directions and see if they will be helpful.

Note: The attached pic correlates with the directions. Note this is for the removal of the entire lock cylinder case unit. If you want only the lock, let me know.

Over the past couple of weeks, my digital clock has reset to 12:00 when I start my truck as if the power was interrupted. It has become more and more frequent. I also notice my headlights would dim slightly on occasion. This morning as I switch my transmission from reverse to drive, all of the sudden all my dash indicators lit up as when you first start the car. Then when I stopped and turned my ignition switch to the first position after run to turn off my engine, the car went completely dead, no power at all. I played around with the switch, the shifter and then I think it was when I hit my brake pedal, all of the sudden the power returned!! Please help with any suggestions on whether its possibly the ignition swithch, a relay, or whatever. Thanks.

sounds like the tumblers in the lock cylinder are stuck.Try squirting a small bit of WD40 into the cylinder, then jiggle the key while attempting to turn it.If this doesn't work, you will need to replace the lock cylinder. The cost will depend greatly on how difficult it is to remove the damaged cylinder.

You will need a small punch or even a paper clip to release the cylinder. Unhook the battery before you start this process.
With the bottom and top cover off look at the area around the cylinder. You will see a small hole about 1/32 to 1/16 in size on the top side of the assembly. Note there is another hole about 1/4 in size just below it. Turn the key forward until you are in the start position. Put the paperclip in the hole and push in. At the same time pull out on the cylinder. It should release easily. Now just slide the new cylinder in place and turn it.

Probably a collapsed ignition key barrel, if the key will not turn this is normally the cause.

i had a 2000 silverado that the key stuck on.but mine stuck in the accessory position.i got the key to turn by removing the passlock cable that is attatched to the ignition cylinder housing.you have to remove the column trim and the cable should enter from the bottom of the housing.once you get the cylinder back to the off position, leave the passlock cable out, turn the key forward too the on position, and depress the locking pin on top of the housing as you turn the key back to the off position.the cylinder should come out at this point.

Ok first disconnect neg battery cable. Now remove the upper and lower steering column trim covers. Set tilt in mid position. Remove steering wheel make sure to remove the air bag fuse first. Roll back the shift lever seal, remove tilt wheel lever. Hold ignition in start position and use a bent awl or small allen wrench and press lock cylinder retaining pin (see pick), release lock cylinder to run position and remove lock cylinder. Put in new lock cylinder and put it all back together.

Last night I drove my husbands truck for Amish (we live in PA!). When I got to the guys house, I turned the truck back on to leave but the gear shift was stuck. The Amish guy had to help me pull it down to D. I drove the guy to a store and when we were about to leave, the gear shift had the same issue; it was stuck on park. Again he had to help me get it down to drive, by pushing it really hard down to D. So I finally finish up driving for him and get home. I park the truck in it's usual spot and go to turn off the truck, but the key and ignition is locked in the 'on' position. The truck sat there for maybe up to an hour as my husband and I did everything we could to turn it off. We tried moving the wheel, putting it in neutral, tapping the key with a screwdriver; everything. My husband said it was probably my fault because whenever I turn his truck on, I "turn the key too far forward". So I guess his theory is that I turned it too far and it locked up. Now that I type out the whole story, I wonder if pushing the gear shift thingy too hard cause something to happen? I called mechanics and lock smiths and all are confused. We are going to bring it into the dealership tonight or tomorrow for a quote, which I'm really scared about.
Have you ever experienced this before? If you have fixed this issue before, what price did you charge? I understand that you can't diagnose my issue online but I thought I'd at least get some opinions as to what may have happened with his truck.

You probably broke it when you forced it out of park.

That would be called the shift interlock feature. It operates on the same circuit as the brake lights so the first thing you want to do is to make sure the brake lights are working when this problem is present. If the brake lights are working, that proves the circuit is good up to that point, then you'll have to get to the solenoid in the console. Disassemble as much as you have to to access the solenoid near the shifting mechanism. Us a 12v test light to test for power coming and going at the solenoid when the brake is applied. If power is arriving and switching and the solenoid is not triggering, the solenoid is bad and will have to be replaced.

Don't laugh, but are the brake lights coming on? The brake light switch powers the park lock solenoid. If the switch doesn't send power to the solenoid, the shifter will stick in park. Or if are already in gear and want to shift to park, the key won't come out.

Just to be clear, will the key remain in the on position or will it go back to the ACC position but just not come out.

If the key will not turn at all and it stuck in the on position, then I suspect the cylinder is the issue.

However, if it is only going to the ACC position but not go to the off position and come out then I suspect you have an issue with the interlock solenoid. However, these are different issues so we need to clarify it first.

If you can get a quick video of this issue that will really help. Thanks

IGNITION SWITCH Removal 1. Remove steering column-to-dash panel bracket. Lower steering column. Remove ignition switch retaining screws. Place ignition switch lock cylinder in LOCK position. 2. If cylinder lock was removed, the actuating rod to the switch should be pulled up until there is a definite stop, then moved down one detent, which is the LOCK position. Disconnect electrical harness connectors. Remove ignition switch assembly. See Fig. 1. Fig. 1: Identifying Column Switches Courtesy of GENERAL MOTORS CORP. Installation Place ignition switch in LOCK position. See Fig. 2. Install ignition switch. Ensure actuating rod is aligned with ignition switch. To complete installation, reverse removal procedure. Fig. 2: Identifying Ignition Switch LOCK Position Courtesy of GENERAL MOTORS CORP. NOTE: It is not necessary to remove steering wheel. Ignition switch is mounted on top of steering column, near front of dash. NOTE: Use only specified screws. Using screws that are too long may prevent column from compressing under impact.

Remove the steering wheel. Remove the turn signal switch. It is not necessary to completely remove the switch from the column. Pull the switch rearward far enough to slip it over the end of the shaft, but do not pull the harness out of the column. Turn the lock to Run. If necessary, remove the ignition key. If equipped, remove the buzzer switch assembly. Remove the lock retaining screw and remove the lock cylinder. WARNING If the retaining screw is dropped on removal, it may fall into the column, requiring complete disassembly of the column to retrieve the screw.

https://www.2carpros.com/forum/automotive_pictures/261618_1_202.jpg

To install: Rotate the key to the stop while holding onto the cylinder. Push the lock all the way in. Install the screw. Tighten the screw to 40 inch lbs. (5 Nm) for regular columns, 22 inch lbs. (2.5 Nm) for tilt columns. Install the turn signal switch and the steering wheel.
