I, after changing a fuse and it being out for some time, it was the PAT fuse. After replacing it I am getting NO Cranking of the engine. I know this is usually the PCM causing this. Is there a way to RESET the PCM. I have done the disconnect battery and turn on the ignition 30 minutes, turn off ign and hook Batt back up. NOTHING. I have followed now at least 3 different RESET PCM options. Can you help.

If its not an anti theft problem could be one of the following below:

**No crank at all/nothing/nada when key is engage to starting position

Could be a blown fusible link, the starter, starter relay, clutch switch/park and neutral switch/transmission position switch and ignition switch assuming the battery condition and connections are good. Note:If it doesn't apply disregard.

Electrical problem
2002 Ford Taurus 6 cyl Automatic 135000 miles

Is there adifference in the PMC part versus the ECM part? Ford dealer told me I need to replace the PCM - after hearing cost, they advised I could purchase the part on my own (used/rebuilt) and they would install it - saving me several hundred dollars. However, I cannot locate a PCM part on any website...lots of ECM's, not PCM's.

Power control module (PCM)

I am sure it is PCM - that is even written on my paperwork for the diagnosis and oil change they did.

I have confirmned with the dealer that it is PCM, not ECM. I am not a car geek - I'll run rings around you on accounting questions, but not car questions, so please excuse my stupidity ......so I still have the original question as to what is the difference and where are suggested places to purchase. THANKS

Sir,
Can I ask what you mean by "you'll run circles" around me regarding accounting questions? I never suggested you were stupid and would never do that to anyone, and I assure you I have my Masters too. However, I don't consider myself a "Geek". Throughout my life, I have learned as much as I can, not limiting myself to one area of expertise.

Regardless, the only places you will be able to locate a used one is from a salvage yard unless you come across one on another site. If you do find one, make sure the part number is the same as yours. As far as a new one, it is not an aftermarket part. Therefore, no parts store will sell them. I have checked the internet and came up with several places that sell them.

I wish I had a better answer for you, but those are the facts. As far as the PCM / ECM issue, I just wanted to make sure the dealership was sure of what they were asking for. A PCM isn't a cheap part.

To define the PCM, it is the brain of the engine control system. When it isn't working properly, then the engine or anything the microprocessor controls may not be working properly. For example, such items include, and are not limited to, the transmission, charging system, various emission control items, and onboard control modules can malfunction.

I hope this helps.

ok, I just traded for this Taurus, and the guy told me the check engine light was on because the gas cap needed to be replaced. SO, I replaced the gas cap, and a friend reset the computer by unhooking the battery...now there's a noise coming from where the vents blow air next to your feet. It sounds like a tape that's stuck in a tape player that keeps trying to flip sides...what the heck?

Yes, I did what you said, started temp out at 90 and slowly worked my way down...at 74 degrees, the noise stopped. If I clicked back up to 75 it started again.

I'm glad you got back to me. I felt like *&^% after sending my response. You're right. You could run circles around me in accounting. I love cars and went to school for it years ago (nearly 30) but also went on to college where I got my masters in education. Presently, I work full time in education and part time in a shop. I'll be honest, technology is advancing so fast, one almost needs a mechanical engineering degree to work on today's cars.

Anyway, please let me know if I can help in any other way and I apologize for how I responded. I hope you can accept that.

Take care, have a nice Easter, and again, let me know if I can help you further.

Thanks for the reply - and I did originally think you just had zero sense of humor! In the meantime, where exactly do I locate the PCM on the 2002 Ford Taurus? Local junkyard has one 2002 taurus I can get the brain out of for $40 - but I have to know where it is AND I need the part number off my existing brain ( by the way, my wife would love to get the part # for MY brain - she swears I have missed a few recalls). I have a neighbor who works on cars, so I may ask him for assistance in gettign the part out at local junkyard (1 mile from the house).

THANKS

Hay: I know I've missed several recalls. Try teaching high school students. Actually, I really enjoy it. Today they covered my truck with posters (april fools day). I couldn't get mad. They put a lot of time into it and actually they were all nice comments. I still work in a district filled with great students. As far as the PCM location, according to Mitchel online it is under the hood on the right side of the firewall. If you don't find it, let me know. The plug going to it will have several pins. Here is a picture of the terminal connector so you can see how many I am refering to.

Here is a picture from Ford of the PCM mounted. NOTE: When you replace it, make sure the battery is disconnected first. Also, there is a relearn process with the new one.

Let me know what you find or if you have other questions. I have to run to repair my son's motorcycle, so I'll be back in about an hour. Joe

WOW - this is wonderful. Thank you so much - and of course, one last question - junkyard wants me to bring the part number with me - I do nto want to unhook the current semi-functional PCM in my Taurus to get it. Any idea what the part number is?

I'll let you know Monday if I had success.

THANKS again so much.

how do you reset the computer on a 99 ford taurus? someone told me to disconnect the negative terminal and touch it to the positive terminal for 10 seconds, let it sit for 15 minutes and then get in and start it and put it in drive and hold my foot on the brake for 10 minutes and it should reset... is that correct?

Ok. I replaced the blend door actuator...and it worked - the noise stopped, and the air changed temp, etc. Then it started blowing only hot air, no matter what setting I had it on. I unplugged the battery, and added coolant...and it worked again. Now, it's back to only blowing hot air. The coolant is smack full, I couldn't add any more if my life depended on it. Any suggestions?

Hi there, Basic strategy re learn can be normally achieved by driving the car about 10 miles in some cases a little further, other re programing must be done with the appropriate service tool.

I wish I could tell you. The number could be one of many. The PCM used is based on so many different factors, options, engine, trans... The only way to be sure is to remove it. I wish I had a better answer, but that is all you can do to be sure.

You have a great Easter, and I look forward to hearing from you on Monday.

So, if I take out the current one to get the part number, will I have to have it (the old one) go thru a relearn process when I put the old one in?

I assume I have to take it to the dealer for the relearn process to occur. Oh boy, another assumption......

THANKS AGAIN and Have a great Easter to you and your family

You may be able to get it out without disconnecting the wiring harness. If that is the case, then you won't have to go through the relearn. As far as the relearn process, if we get to that point, I can walk you through it. You can do it yourself. A dealer would most likely charge you a hundred dollars for nothing.

Would you please go ahead and send me the relearn instructions? It is not coming out without disconnection as we saw last night.

Additional donation coming to you and the company for the wonderful help. It would be awesome if i can pull this off and "fix it" myself. Heck, my wife may even decide to keep this old model around for 20 more years instead of trading me in for a new younger sleek model :)

Thanks again

According to mitchel online, I think I have some good news for you. Based on what I read, if you are replacing the PCM with a direct replacement part, it appears nothing needs done unless you have added aftermarket parts / components to the car. The only time (according to mitchel) it needs to be flashed (relearn) is when you replace it with a new PCM. At that point you would need to download information from the old one to the new one via a scan tool.

Based on everything I read, it appears it should be plug and play (so to say).

Just remember to make sure the battery is disconnected while working on it. Don't hook the battery up before replacement is complete.

Let me know if it works. If not, I have a few friends that work at a local Ford dealer. They'll let me know if there is something different we need to do.

Mitchell's On Demand didn't specify programming for the new PCM and neither did the website for the company that I work for. But to be sure, you can call your local Ford dealership and ask the service department for clarification.
