Due to large amounts of snow the past couple weeks have been tough driving and have been going in and out of 4 wheel drive a lot. The other day I was in 4 wheel drive and heard a couple squeaks. After going back to 2 wheel drive there seems to be a humming or whirring noise coming from the front end. Sounds comparable to the noise a tire makes while driving on asphalt, just louder. I just notice it mainly while coasting at low speeds (10-20 mph). It also doesn't seem to coast quite as well and seems to take a little more power to accelerate. It also seems a little harder to turn the steering wheel, but that could just be my imagination. It has also been bitter cold the past week, don't know if that could have anything to do with it. Thanks!

I would first check the fluid levels in differential and transfer case, if OK, then it may be PS pump.

Maybe it's Just snow or ice Caked Up in your Wheel well against your tire?

Low tires?

Locking hub-not fully disengaged or engaged?

Wheel bearings?

Brakes?

Just throwing things out there!

I just had a bad experience with my CJ 5 Transfer case.

I had just Fully (everything within...NEW!) rebuilt the tranny , then the Dang transfer case locked up and busted the case (at 55, my Jeep acted as if Somersaults and Half Gainers, was going to be the next Main Event!)......Exact Cause of the bearing failure, still a mystery!..... So I sorta halfway went thru, and installed a 'Good' used transfer case------I'm now BIG-TIME Gun-Shy and Paranoid, I haven't even turned on the radio, cause I'm still listening for Imaginary Noises!........I know exactly what you mean about Imagination!

Want a 2nd Free Opinion?-----Sometimes the Popular Auto Parts store guys will come out and sorta look for the obvious....Also Tire stores and alignment shops are "Qualified Enough" and will give you a FAST, FREE DIAGNOSIS.......It might also "Hinge On" your location and the "Hospitality Factor" in your region!

But definitely get it EXAMINED!

Please let us know what the issue is---Maybe we can pass it along to someone else in distress.

Had the truck looked at and they found that the front driver's side wheel hub was locked into 4x4. They said the suction was there but the actuator ring broke so it couldn't disengage. I'm guessing the two squeaks I heard just before I noticed the problem was that ring busting. I'm also wondering if that ring was faulty from the beginning. The same ring was replaced in August 2010 and ever since I heard a squeak or chirp noise coming from that wheel. Thought it was the breaks but had them checked out and they were good, and they couldn't ever find the culprit. So now I'm thinking that ring was either faulty or installed wrong from the beginning.

I own a 2006 Ford F-150 Supercrew 2WD. When driving at higher velocities 20+ mph, I've noticed a slight vibration that is accompanied by low, but gradually increases with speed, humming noise. Also, I've noticed that when I turn left it's still there; however, when I turn right both noise and vibration are absent. I already had tires rotated and balanced, but the problem still persists. Thanks, Jesse

You have a bad wheel bearing. If it goes away when you turn right, the weight is shifted from the right to the left of the vehicle. When the weight is off the right bearing, the noise is gone.

Have that checked and let me know what you find.

All wheel drive Harley pick up truck... , getting a humming noise from rear end.. Sounds like driving on a gravel road.. Any idea what causes the noise? Could it be the bearings? Can they be visually checked?

That sounds like a bearing. Does the noise change if you turn?

If there is no change when you turn, then chances are it is a bearing in the differential itself.

That is where I would start. Check u-joints and also wheel bearings. You may want to also check the output bearings arom the transfercase.

I have a Ford 2001 F 150 Supercrew, 127,000 miles, 4.6L engine. No major probs., serviced regularly per manual. Did get new tranny 50,000 miles when blew out but no probs. since. Noticed humming noise coming from right front, seemed like worse when accelerating, but not consistant. re-did wheel bearings, and now still notice but \now also happened when fully stopped at red lights, began the low pitch hum about 1 full minute, then stopped.

Any clues to what this is?

happened when fully stopped at red lights-Could be Steering Pump or AC Compressor-its not moving therefore the brake and suspension is out of the way for the problem.

Try disconnecting the belt one at a time to eliminate the noise from belt driven components-continues could be a transmission converter problem, check the the transmission level while engine is idling at park and drive.

Subject: F150 humming noise
thanks, I will try that. Hard to find someone other than dealer...as a female they give me gobbly gook and a big bill since I am car clueless.

Take it to a community college that has an automotive program and pay them a small fee or look around the neighborhood that fixes car or you can have the boyfriend or soon to be hubby get in there and get grease up to find the noise lol.

The belts that's where we start for the noise, if not the belt come on back and I'll try my very best on it.

Hope this helps and Good Luck

Problem posting reply but will try:
took it to mechanic, he drove it around, never heard the noise. No charge! (Imagine that!) 1 block away as I drove off...of course it started up again.....doesn't matter if still or in motion,,,is off and on.

Had oil changed at Evans Tire, guy said Fords notorious for this, something about the belt gets glazed, don't worry....so I guess I won't until something breaks???

Thanks for your help...it does seem to come from the Serpentine belt.

try taking off the eng cover to expose the idle air control valve, while the humming is happening, unplug the valve while holding the throttle open partially to keep it running, if the humming stops then you need to replace the iac valve, very easy, two bolts and one connector.

Bought a used 1999 f150 4x4 a few years ago. It came with a set of "off-road" tires that were quite loud while driving normal highway/city streets. Recently replaced the tires with "standard" tires and now I hear a humming/whining noise when I drive. It's an immediate noise that I hear at low speeds as well as high speeds and it seems to be coming from "behind". The noise is there when I press the accelerator but is much more quiet as soon as I take my foot off the accelerator. I replaced the u-joints and no change to the noise. The noise is best described as a whining/humming noise. Noticed that when I put the truck in 4-wheel drive the sound is diminished/gone? Any ideas/suggestions? Will probably take it in and pray for the best.

Sounds like it may be the transfer case.Usually when it is put in 4wd it loads the chain down and can stop the whining noise.May want to try a service first.

1999 Ford F-150 mileage: 89,000. My question is due to a humming or whining noise as I accelerate. Once I get to about 40 mph, I begin to hear what sounds like a loud humming from my tires. It almost sounds like the noise as if I had big tires on the truck. The tires are of normal size. As I decelerate, the noise winds down. Will the pilot bearing or throw out bearing cause this? I checked the wheel bearings, and they are fine. Also, when I push in the clutch, the noise seems to disappear. I realize without driving the vehicle it is hard to make an assumption. Any advice would be helpful.

We would try to isolate the problem by driving the car at the speed at which the noise is the loudest and then put the transmission in neutral and shut off the engine. If the noise is still there, it is probably in the drive train or possible in the transmission. If the noise is gone, then it may be the clutch or the engine.

That tends to point toward a pinion bearing problem in the differential.
