The camshaft sensor went out in November. I had it replaced. It went out again this morning, after I made a sharp turn. The tech said that it looked as if something had hit it. I want to do the job myself this time.

My gas pedal went dead while driving down the highway. The engine stayed running for a few minutes at an idle then completely stalled. The check engine light and the lightning bolt came on when the gas pedal . I put the code reader on and it gave me P0340 camshaft position sensor A circuit (bank 1 or single sensor) code. I changed the camshaft position sensor on the passenger side which I think is bank 2. Is there 2 camshaft sensors? One for each side. My truck is on the highway so any help would be appreciated. thanks

Good evening,

This code is usually a wiring issue with a 5 volt reference voltage not present at the sensor.

Do you have a meter to check the voltage?

Also is there 2 different sensors on the engine? Bank 1 and bank 2 or is it just a single camshaft sensor on this engine? Thanks

Okay, thanks. I will check the voltage with a meter and see what it says. I called our service center for Dodge and the mechanic said there was one for bank 1 and one for the second bank .. I changed the bank 2 sensor.. I look for the bank 1 sensor also.. Thanks again we appreciate it a lot.

Me and my dad tried what we could. There is only 1 sensor. Not sure why the Dodge dealer in town would tell me there is 2. but regardless I need my truck going and am not very good with electrical systems so I just got it towed to the shop. I will post what they find on here. Thanks

Okay, I told you there was only one sensor. They need to check the voltage to the sensor and the ECM to be sure it is not a wiring issue.

Broke off inside block and I cannot find where it went. Looks like it fell in a void. Would it be alright to put a new one in and leave the missing part where ever it may be? Any help would be really great.

Hi and thanks for using 2CarPros.com. No, it is not a good idea. If the broken part is lost in the engine, it will caused other damage. Please let me know what engine is in this truck so I can provide directions and pictures for taking things apart to find the broken part.

It was the first attachment that I provided in the last post. I included it again here. Sorry for the confusion. It is number 1 in the picture and it states that it is located on the timing gear cover which is next to the ECM.

Let me know if you still can't find it and I will see if I can find a better picture. Thanks

Do I see spark plug wires? This is a gas engine 5.9L not diesel. No wonder you can't find it with what I provided.

Your description just said 2003 Ram Truck 5.9L. I didn't pick up on the V8. Just assumed it was a diesel. Sorry for the confusion.

It should be on the driver side of the intake, towards the rear of the engine under the fuel rail just next to the distributor. Take a look at these drawings.

Let me know if this helps.

My apologies. I looked up the location for the connector. Here are the instructions to remove the actual sensor. It is part of the distributor.

The aftermarket may call it a Pickup Coil.

Please see the attached documents.

No code just a truck that was given to me. We changed the motor and radiator and then it started acting like it wasn’t getting gas. so I decided to replace the cam shaft sensor. It’s a 5.2 motor.

Edit: I did have a scan on my car done here is codes:

Okay, thanks.

The cam sensor is located in the distributor. It is an easy replacement but you need to follow the flow chart to determine if it is the sensor or wiring. Codes do not always show a part failure, just a system failure.

https://www.2carpros.com/articles/how-to-check-wiring

I attached the flow charts for you to view and the tests required.

You will need a voltmeter for these tests.

How did you determine it was bad?

Did you follow the flow chart to make you replace it?

Did you verify voltage to the sensor?

You need a volt meter to do the checks in the flow chart.

https://www.2carpros.com/articles/how-to-check-wiring

https://www.2carpros.com/articles/how-to-use-a-voltmeter

Codes rarely identify bad parts, just failed systems. diagnostics need to be done and repairs made before clearing the light.

If it does not run, the light will not be on.

Re check your work. If it ran with the old one, it should run with the replacement.

Can you post a picture of the sensor?

Roy

I bought the truck listed above 3500 dually with the V10. I was told the crankshaft sensor was bad. I ordered it from Red China, only place I could find one, and when it came I went to put it in and it was the camshaft sensor which was missing. So I ordered the camshaft sensor from Red China.

I put it in with the plastic rib on the face touching the camshaft and the vehicle started right up and ran smooth for about four seconds and stopped. I pulled out the camshaft sensor and the end was broken off.

So I ordered another from Red China and cut the plastic off and used a cereal box cardboard as a spacer and it did not start at all. I pulled it out and the end was also broken off. So I ordered another which I have not yet tried again.

One buddy told me the camshaft bearings may be worn and allowing too much play on the sensor. I turned the engine by hand with my finger on the wheel and felt only the cut groves.

I could never find the person who took out the original camshaft sensor to ask them if the tip was broken off.

This is an ole truck and I really do not want to pull the engine. I was thinking about pulling the front timing chain cover off and inspect for junk that may be throw around that may break off the tip off the camshaft sensor.

If I did not see an obvious damage, can I notice excessive play in the camshaft bearings by wiggling the camshaft gear? If there is excess wear can I pull the camshaft out of the engine and replace the camshaft bearings in the engine in the truck?

This is the most I want to do to this old truck. What do you think may be the reason two camshaft sensor tips broke off? What do you recommend I do to keep it on the cheap?

If I can not make this old truck run, I will use the rear end and springs and convert my 1993 Dodge Ram 4x4 2500HD 5.9 Cummings to a dually if it looks like it will work.

Any ideas or input will be highly appreciated. Thanks!

Good morning.

There is wobble from the cam bearings and the cam is coming in contact with the sensor and breaking the end off.

You will not be able to feel the play at all.

The engine will have to be disassembled to find the failure. There is no easy fix for this one.

Thanks Roy, is it possible to slip the cam out the front of the engine while the engine is in the truck and replace the cam bearings in the engine, or do the bearings must be put in from the back of the engine? What do I owe you Bro?

The engine has to be removed to replace the bearings. You are talking about an overhaul.
