The problem here is the shift interlock control system-could be the shift lock solenoid. Is your brake lights working?

You can't take the console out while the shifter is stuck in park and you can't move the shifter without the console out. But, take the trim ring off around the shifter. Carefully lift it by hand, it pulls off. Look thru the crack on the left of the shifter. There's a pink plastic lever with a silver wire attached to it. Push this toward the rear of the car with a flat screwdriver while the car is running and your foot is on the brake pedal. The shifter will release from park. Leave it in neutral, turn the car off, block the wheels and then continue to remove the center console. My car had the spring broken off at the pink part. I found the small spring laying under the console and I drilled a hole thru the pink plastic lever because the hook busted off the pink lever. Bend the spring eyelet and thread it thru the hole you drill. Now, that's better than new. Any Chrysler engineers out there? Take some notes!

I tried this but I had difficulty removing the center console. My car has the same problem but it is a 2008 Sebring convertible. What is the easiest way to remove the center console?

There's a recall on this, almost caused me to loss my job cuz no one to help me get it going. I paid a auto tow service which luckily didn't charge me anymore to take to a dealer who I paid over $200 to fix. However several months later Chrysler sent me a recall note about the issue. They did refund after taking time and money to send the repair and payment info to them. Look on your insurance website for the recall info for your specific car, sorry I've forgotten the recall info and don't have handy but its easy to find. Hope this helps quicken the fix and gets you going again soon!

Thanks y2peaches.

There's two different versions of the Sebring. I looked it up on the Chrysler web site and found recall RC-K16-10 and RC-CK16-10. Both refer to a "gear shift lever interlock spring retainer hook" that can break. The recall that pertains to this car is determined by the build date. Time to give the dealer a call.

See if the brake lights work, if not the brake switch has probably gone bad, and it controls the shift lock as well as the brake lights.Check all fuses with a test light too (fuse 14)

If the wheels aren't straight ahead, try tugging on the steering wheel to relieve pressure on the steering wheel lock mechanism.

I'm looking to purchase this used car, and the transmission has been replaced and now when the car is in drive the shifter shows it is in neutral. The car drives fine, no slipping or problems shifting from gear to gear but I'm wondering if I should be concerned by the indicator no showing the right position?

Just need to pop the shifter cover and adjust the pointer. It is quite possible when they installed the transmission , they "screwed" up the pointer

Transmission problem
2007 Chrysler Sebring Automatic 50000 miles

I can't get the car out of park. I have my foot on the brake. The car is on level ground. I can turn the car on, turn the wheels, my brake lights work.

I also read to try turning the key just a little, but not where the car will start, then try to put it in neutral - that doesn't work either. Thanks in advance for your help!

You can try a self-diagnostic test. To activate self diagnostic program: With the ignition switch in the OFF position, depress the TRIP and RESET buttons. While holding the TRIP and RESET button turn the ignition switch to the ON position. Continue to hold the TRIP and RESET buttons until the word CODE appears in the odometer windows (about five seconds ) then release the buttons. If a problem exists, the system will display Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTC's). If no problem exists, the code 999 (End Test) will momentarily appear. You may get a P0928 code, it's the bsti, or Brake transmission saftey interlock. Theory of Operation The Brake Transmission Safety Interlock (BTSI) is a safety feature that prohibits movement of the shift lever out of park unless certain conditions are met. The Cluster controls the BTSI solenoid. The Cluster will engage the BTSI solenoid when the module detects the depression of the brake pedal thus allowing the transmission shift lever to move from the park position to any other position. Failure of the control circuit may inhibit the movement of the shift lever and cause this DTC to set. When Monitored: When the ignition is in accessory, run or start position. Set Condition: This DTC will set if the Cluster detects a problem with the BTSI solenoid control circuit. The DTC will remain active until the Cluster no longer detects a failure of the BTSI control circuit.

Transmission problem
2007 Chrysler Sebring 4 cyl Automatic 65000 miles

My 2007 Chrysler sebring is stuck in park. It won't shift out of park. People have tried rocking it and this did not work. I have read other similar questions on this and your response was shift interlock control system. Is this electrical? I did notice there was a recall last year on the electrical wiring system, the tire pressure monitoring system. Would this cause the problem?

That recall had nothing to do with this. This may sound like a stupid question, but are the brake lights working when you hit the brakes?

This is apparently a fairly common problem with the Sebring. There is a plastic part on the shift interlock system which frequently breaks. You will need to have that part replaced before you can shift out of Park.

I have a 2007 Chrysler Sebring that won't go out of Park. I have tried pushing the button under the cup holder that is supposed to override the problem, but nothing seems to work. What do I need to do to fix this problem?

found this you may want to try.
The gear shift in the automatic transmissions have a spring that allows you to take the vehicle out of park that is connected to a pink piece next to the shifter on the drivers/left side. The pink piece is prone to failure and breaks thus releasing the spring.

The correct fix to this is buying the $127 transmission shifter assembly. There are methods to allow you to drive it to the dealership. One way is to remove the chrome bezel around the shifter, on the center console, and use a screwdriver to pull the pink piece located on the left of the shifter towards the back of the vehicle after applying sufficient pressure to the brake pedal. This will allow you to make it to the dealership to buy the part to fix it or allow them to install it for you.
Or
Sense you now know whats wrong with it you can quickly repair this your self and save the $127. Pop out the A/C control panel it has 3 plugs on the back of it and 1 plug for the middle console, next remove the 2 10mm screws located near the top where the A/C panel was and the 4 in the middle console. Pull up on the emergency break hard so that it is all the way out of the way. At last lift up on the middle console and it comes right out. The FIX is simple and better then the factory replacement part, drilling a small hole through the pink plastic about 2 10ths of an inch away from the right side. Reattach the spring to the new hole and the black tab on the right back side it's about 2 inches from the pink plastic. Then reinstall everything. Hope this helps, and saves you some money.

Check the brake lights. If they are not working, the interlock system would prevent you from shifting out of park.
