No codes are on only does it when trans is around that temp and only in reverse

Ok. Check the parking brake. Make sure it's disengaging completely.

"an had full power" Does that mean in Reverse, or Drive?

There are 2 types of scans that can be done. Most shops and parts stores will only do a superficial scan that only pulls codes that set the Check Engine Light. All sorts of driveability codes that won't effect emissions won't set that light. You need a full, or deep scan to see if the Transmission Control Module noticed anything. Transmission codes won't set the CEL, but they can and will cause driveability issues.

Most likely there's a worn valve or O-ring in the transmission,probably the valve body, that is malfunctioning occasionally once the trans it at operating temp.

2005 Chevy Silverado Z71 4X4 automatic 5.3 liter 75,000mi. Transmission slipping and vibration noise. I have changed all transmission ,gear oil, and filters when this first started to happen and double checked all fluid levels this did not correct the problem.

Has the check engine light come on? ALso, have you owned the vehicle since it was new? When you changed the trans fluid, was the old fluid dirty or have a burnt smell to it?

i purchased the truck used with 40,000 miles from a chevy dealer all fluids were checked when i did replace the fluid and trans filter they were in good condition. no smell

The service 4wheel drive light did come on approx at 73000 mi

That wouldn't have anything to do with the trans. If no warning lights came on and the trans is slipping, chances are the clutches are worn or there is a pressure problem in the transmission not fully engaging the clutch pack.

a silly question would the output of the alternator if it is below 14.5 volts cause the transmission to slip based on the signal this provides to the electrical system that would cause a valve to operate incorrectly and if this was a cause would it send a diagnostic code error ?

No. When it gets to this point, it is time for an overhaul. The damage is already done. I recommend servicing the transmission every 50K. A complete flush is the best thing you can do. A normal filter and fluid change anly replaces about 6 qts of fluid. That means there is still about another 5 to 6 qts of dirty fluid in the transmission.

As long as the power remains above 12.0 volts, it won't affect anything.

Any idea on what the cost range would be to replace the clutches or is this a complete rebuild ? and how long this normally would take ?

Another question would be this is the original alternator how long do they normally last under normal wear conditions.

Basically, the trans needs removed and a basic overhaul is completed. I would estimate around 1500.00 if no hard parts are needed. As far as the alt, it should last over 100K with no problem.

Well to make a long story short i took the truck in and my problem is the troque converter is bad and needs to be replaced.approx 600.00 much better than a rebuilt transmission cost. thank you for all the input to all.

Trucks will run and drive fine transmission does great and then it will act like 3rd gear is slipping to a point barely pulls. can let truck sit for a spell and it will do great a job ain't but doesn't last.

That will do it. It isn't building enough pressure to fully engage the clutch packs. I just hope the clutches haven't been damaged from slipping.

This is most likely a fluid issue causing clutch deterioration which causes the slipping. Or it is a cut seal that is causing pressure to drop when 3rd gear is engaged when the fluid is hot.

Basically I suspect you have a clutch issue. When the fluid and clutches heat up, the clutch starts slipping. The only way to fix this for sure is to disassemble the transmission and inspect it.

The fact that this happens when it gets hot and then when it cools down it starts acting normally points to the clutch issue. We can try something if you like too?

We can add a bottle of friction modifier to the transmission that will help soften the clutches so that they may stop chattering. This is only a temporary fix but will buy you some time and confirm it is a clutch issue.

I added a picture of the Mopar modifier because I have used this many times on different transmissions and it has worked. I am sure you can use others but this is the one I have experience with.

Yeah. I think you are at the beginning of larger clutch issues. Unfortunately slipping in this transmission is really only caused by a mechanical issue. So unless you have a sticking solenoid it is a clutch issue. However, a sticking solenoid would most surely set a code because it is not matching the commanded gear.

Okay, thank you that sounds about right because no lights when it does it.

When I put my truck in overdrive I have nothing, when I put it in second gear it pulls out but does not want to keep going. If I lock it in four wheel high and put it in second it drives like it has no problems. But if I put it back in overdrive with 4x4 still locked in it goes back out. What could this be?

Transmission valve body warped. Mildly common on the 700R4. It also sounds like the 3/4 clutch pack is failing which is very common on them when installed in a truck.
Rebuild/replace is about the only repair.
If you rebuild, add in the heavy duty 3/4 clutches and a mild shift kit to apply more pressure to 3/4 pack to keep them from slipping.

You are welcome. If it were me, I would wait until it does it basically all the time. Depending on how intermittent it is, you may be able to buy some time.
