thermostat replacement

Remove the generator

Remove the coolant pipes

Remove the clamp -1- and then remove the coolant hose -2- from the coolant thermostat housing.

Remove the bolts -arrows- and remove the coolant thermostat housing with the thermostat from the engine.

Clean the sealing surface for the O-ring.

Replace the O-ring and lubricate it with coolant.

Install the coolant thermostat housing to the cylinder block and tighten the bolts evenly to 15 Nm.

Check out the diagrams (Below). Please let us know if you need anything else to get the problem fixed.

Thank's for adding the vid links Thomas... I'm sure though once he looked under the hood he would have seen that the steps I posted were more than meets the eye...

I just replaced my thermostat in my 03 vw passat 1.8t fwd wagon because it was giving a p2181 cooling system performance code error. Since replacing the thermostat everything has been working ok except the gas mileage is worse and the hot air from the heater blows REALLY hot. I am worried that even though my temp gauge shows 190 that the engine is overheating. How do I know that the temp gauge isn't broken? It starts at 0 and warms up to 190 and stays there like it is supposed to. Also, is there a coolant temperature sensor and a temperature sending unit and where are they located?

Have you check that you are actually overheating? The CTS is at the rear of the cylinder head

I guess my question is how do I check that I am not overheating? What indicators can I use that don't include the instrument panel temperature gauge?

Test the coolant temperature sensor -hot and cold this will tell you something

This is a job that is more than 3 hours for a pro to do. The engine has to be placed into a service lock position that entails removing the front bumper.

Do you still want to attempt this yourself? There are detailed instructions available if you do.

Coolant Pump & Thermostat

TO REPLACE THERMOSTAT: NOTE: The thermostat is mounted in the bottom of the coolant pump. Procedure: 1.Drain the coolant. 2.Remove the outlet flange mounting bolts. Remove the flange and the thermostat. 3.Position the new thermostat and 0-ring in the outlet. Install the thermostat housing. 4.Refill the cooling system.
