Sure, you can use synthetic oil and take it to 7 or 8K but the cost will more than double so you won't be saving any money.

You wouldn't want to do that anyway. Saturns are notorious for the rings going bad when you go over on your mileage for an oil change which is why you see so many older ones that burn a bunch of oil. Also, the life of the oil filter is only about 3,000, so to properly maintain the car you'd need to at least pull that at 3,000, replace it, and top off your oil to full. Your oil filter should be up top, but if you'd go the filter replacement route, why not just get an oil change? It's better for the vehicle.
And Valvoline's MaxLife oil has ring and seal conditioners in it to lessen the liklihood of burning oil, but you still shouldn't go over on your mileage, not in a Saturn.
