2006 Saturn Ion Checking Oil

When I check the Oil on the dip stick it show full on one side and on the other side it show half full which side is correct?

The lowest side would be the accurate reading. The other side is just splash.

If the lowest side is accurate how do I know wnen it is at the full mark?
what do splash mean for the other side (top)?
