why does my oil level light come on when the oil level are okay?

You have an oil level sensor that needs to be replaced here is a guide and some diagrams below to help you get the problem fixed. You will need to drain the oil.

i just buy a 2003 pontiac gran prix and the oil level light is on, i had check the oil levels in engine and transmission and it seems to be ok!! but the light still on, it could be an electrical problem or something more serius.

What you need to do is hook up an oil pressure gauge to where the oil pressure sending unit is-If normal replace the OPSU. If not could be engine bearings/oil pump./sludge problem in crankcase.

The car "uses" oil, as stated by the dealer. No oil seen in engine, and no oil in driveway where it's parked. I've had the car in twice for oil consumption tests, since GM indicates that it's "acceptable" to "use" 1 quart of oil for 2,000 miles. My question is, how much oil must be lost before the "low oil level" light appears? I'm taking the car in to the dealer tomorrow for the 4th oil consumption test (it's every 500 miles and it's now 2,000 miles) and I checked the dipstick today and the oil level is below the 5th hole on the dipstick.

Low oil level light would appear if oil level did not appear on dipstick.

If it is not leaking it, it is burning it and you sometimes cannot see it.

I doubt GM will do anything about it unless it consumes more oil than their guidlines, because they would probably replace the engine rather than repair it.
