water pump replacement instructions please?

Hi,

Replacing the water pump isn't too hard on this vehicle. However, you will need to lift the front and safely support it. You will need to remove the front passenger side tire to access the pump.

CAUTION:
^ When removing water pump assembly, be careful not to get coolant on drive belt.
^ Water pump cannot be disassembled and should be replaced as a unit.
^ After installing water pump, check for leaks using radiator cap tester.

1. Drain engine coolant.
2. Remove front RH wheel.
3. Remove engine side cover.
4. Remove drive belts and idler pulley.
5. Loosen water pump pulley bolts.
6. Remove water pump pulley.

7. Remove the water pump bolts.
8. Remove the water pump.
^ Remove liquid gasket from water pump and mating surface of cylinder block using a scraper.
9. Installation is in the reverse order of removal.
^ When applying liquid gasket to mating surface of water pump, use Genuine Anaerobic Liquid Gasket or equivalent.
^ When filling radiator with coolant, refer to MA-17, "REFILLING ENGINE COOLANT".
^ When installing drive belts, refer to MA-16, "Checking Drive Belts".

my car runs well, no engine light on, however, occasional smoking...been told the belts need to be replaced as well as maybe the water pump...can the belts be replaced and not the water pump or will replacing the belts and not the pump end up blowing my engine...how do you know if you need a new water pump replaced.

water pump failure will show it leaking from the back. If the water pump is not making a noise and the car runs fine then you should have no problem just replacing the belt. Make sure you make a diagram before taking off the old one off. sometimes the cars do not have a diagram on the front saying how the belt goes on.

How do I remove and replace a water pump for a 1997 nissan sentra?

REMOVAL

1. Drain coolant from radiator and cylinder block.
2. Remove cylinder head front mounting bracket.
3. Loosen water pump pulley bolts.
4. Remove drive belts for power steering pump.
5. Remove water pump pulley.

NOTE:

* When removing water pump assembly, be careful not to get coolant on drive belt.
* Water pump cannot be disassembled and should be replaced as a unit.

6. Remove coolant hoses from water inlet and thermostat housing.




7. Remove water pump bolts.
8. Remove water pump with thermostat housing.




INSTALLATION

1. Use a scraper to remove liquid gasket from water pump. Also, remove traces of liquid gasket from mating surface of cylinder block.




2. Apply a continuous 2.0 - 3.0 mm (0.079 - 0.118 inch) thick bead of liquid gasket to mating surface of water pump. Use Genuine Liquid Gasket, or equivalent.
3. Reverse removal procedure and fill radiator with coolant and install drive belts.

NOTE:

* Be careful not to spill coolant over engine compartment. Use a rag to absorb excess coolant.
* After installing water pump, connect hoses and clamps securely, then check for leaks using radiator cap tester.

The instruction's i posted are to replace the water pump with the engine in the car.So that is the way you do it.

I can understand why you are asking the question of how to do it with engine in vehicle. Space is very tight and if you remove the the engine mount at timing chain end and use a floor jack to lift the engine slightly, you can gain some additional working space.

I never like to work on the water pump for this engine. You need Rubberman of the Fantastic 4 to perform the job.

My car was over heating so I notice that my radiator was leaking. I changed that this afternoon, and there is still a leak while the car is running. So I am assuming that it is the water pump. Do you think that is what it is or are there other possiblities and if it is the water pump how would I go about changing it.

With that many miles, it is recommended that you replace the water pump. But the water pump is located farther back towards the firewall, not by the radiator. If it was me, I would investigate and find where the leak is really coming from, either from the front towards the radiator, or from the two main hoses or the 5 other smaller hoses around the engine block.

1996 Nissan Sentra 4 cyl Front Wheel Drive Automatic

I've pulled a water pump on a 96 Nissan Sentra and there are 5 bolts on the front all different sizes.3 on the side that bolts to the thermostat.I don't know which bolt to put back where because I did not mark them! I have purchased a Haynes manual and there are no pictures showing which bolt lenght to put them back. There's a picture on the thermostat,but none on the water pump. Where do I get this info short of just trying all 8 bolts? Please, If you have a better suggestion I would greatly appreciate it! And yes,I have the motor supported.There's little room to work so I want to get this right before I put sealant on and have to ruin another set of gaskets. It's not too difficult a job until you mess up and don't mark a bolt pattern.

1 longest bolt goes to the bottom close to the thermostat housing. The then count clockwise, medium, long, medium, and medium. The thermostat housing has the 3 shortest ones.

how do you know when a water pump is faulty?

If you are replacing the timing belt then shoule be done at the same time. There is a weep hole on bottom of housing that will leak coolant if seal goes out at the shaft. If bearing goes out you will hear the noise, especially loud with a tech stethoscope. Can also be failed if impeller rusts away or breaks loose and stops moving coolant thru system.
