How do I remove the ****/plunger of the windscreenwiper unit in order to replace the switch - Nissan 1400

I presume the switch is faulty as my wipers and water spray come on automatically without the lever being activated.The switch does still function when plunger is pullewd out.I however can not remove the **** in order to access the switch behind the dash
