The dealer says we must burn high octane fuel. Can I use 87 octane and adjust the timing to eliminate the ping due to the lean mixture, or will this cause damage to the engine?

If the dealership is saying to use high octane fuel, then you need to use high octane fuel. Some vehicles will only run properly if they do. I can only use high octane fuel in my vehicle. It sucks because I have to pay more for gas but if I use lower octane fuel, I risk damaging the engine with premature ignition causing engine knock. I'm not entirely sure how you plan on adjusting the timing either. Cars nowadays have the timing set to certain position and is electronically controlled by the PCM. Changing the timing yourself can lead to catastrophic engine failure especially if its an interference motor. All the pistons and valves need to be moving at a certain rate in order not to crash into each other. You will most likely get a check engine light right away to tell you the timing is off. So I would just do what the manufacturers are recommending and not change anything else.
