window will not roll up

I took off the door panel because my drivers side window will not roll up. No noise, and every other window is fine. Had to fix it when I got it but I am an idiot and left the window down.

Upon taking it off, reconnecting the cables, all other windows still work, but nothing for drivers. I took off the water shield and felt the cables are still in tact so I cannot force the window to close by hand.

Any suggestions for how to fix? Or at least roll up the window for a temporary fix?

Look at the window motor, there should be a two wire connector to it. Run a pair of jumper wires from the battery to the door area. Now follow the motor wiring up to the switch, should be a dark blue and a brown if the diagram is correct. Unplug the connector for the window from the switch and locate the two pins that go to the window. Put one of the jumper leads on one of the pins and touch the other jumper to the other pin. The window motor should try to move one way or the other. If the window starts going up just hold the wires in place until it gets closed. If it tries to go down, reverse the two power leads from the battery.

If this works and the window moves you have narrowed the problem down to the drivers window switch. Replace it and the windows should work again.

One day my windows stopped working. All my fuses are okay and I am getting power to my windows because i can hear my automatic roll down work. I tried a different switch and that was not the problem. I tried to roll down the other windows from their switch and they won't work. My sunroof works but none of my windows will roll down. It has drove me up the wall. I don't want to have someone fix it if its a small problem but I need as much of advice as possible.

Thanks,

Andrew

I did not test the switch with a test light but bought another switch to see if it would work and it didn't work. When my headlights are on and I push the switch the lights dim out on the switch.

If you have done the switch here is a guide to help test the circuits and the wiring diagrams so you can see how the system works and where to test for power and ground.

https://www.2carpros.com/articles/electric-window-repair

and

Check out the diagrams (Below). Please let us know what you find. We are interested to see what it is.

So I just fixed this issue in my particular case ot was a ground wire coming from the door into the car which i diagnosed by opening and closing the door with the window button pressed down. So after diagnosing it i pulled all the wires out and started messing with grounds since i had the relay in the switch buzzing meaning i had power to the switch when i pulled one of the grounds it snapped ran a test lead between the snapped ends and windows started working so hooked up a wire between the two snapped ends after stripping them down and the windows now work

Having problems w/ the passenger power window not going up all the way. Thinking that it could be possible it may be off track. How easy is the procedure to get the window back on track?

Check this page for trim removal, then inspect the runners, and area that the glass attaches to.

Hi guys, I am a female and in need of some desperate help. My power window on the front driver side just stopped working. Its had this problem for about 2 months where I would have to force it back up, but 2 days ago I let it down and now it won't come up.

I know its either the motor or the regulator, which one do I replace with my local mechanic. It goes down perfect, all the other windows work and the power locks work. Just won't go back up

lachisolm,

You should probably let your mechanic determine if the register or the motor needs to be replaced.

Personally, in view of the age of the vehicle and since it is the most used window in the car, I would replace the Register Assembly (consists of motor and register). Also, it takes much less time to install.

Good luck,

I had the same issue. You need a new power window switch, but you have to buy the entire cluster of switches, it is just one piece. Cost is about $100 but you can get it used for about half the price.

urodriguez is correct, it probably is the switch assembly instead of the register assembly.

You may want to read my previous post "2001 Chevy Impala Power Window goes down but not up? Driver" . It is on page 12 near the bottom today.(Jan 12, 2010). May be on page 13 later.
There's instructions for removal and installation. Also, if you can use a small screwdriver, you may want to try a temporary fix. (That's in there, too).

suspect faulty switch or wiring to switch. not really anything you can do to solve it without removing door panel and making repairs to the wiring as needed and replacing switch.

Hi cdown867584,

I had this same problem with my wife's 2002 Chevy Impala. When it first started happening, I found that I could get it to work if I pushed the switch toward the driver while holding it down. Then after a while, it stopped working no matter what I did.

There are a number of sites on ebay that sell the switch assembly and it can be removed fairly easily.

I had a posting in April for GOLD3N BARR3L Subject: 2001 Chevy Impala Power Window goes down but not up? Driver.. It's probably a few pages back in the postings, but you should be able to locate it. It has instructions on removal and installation of the switch assembly.

If he only charged you $40, he probably didn't change the motor. For that price he probably only replaced your switch.
You may have a dirty switch; one 'side' of the switch is dirty (the one you push the switch to roll up the window, causing it to malfunction.) that's just a guess however. An easy way to find out is to remove a good known switch from another door in your car, and put it on the driver door (it's easy; all you need is to remove the ashtray in the door). If the window goes up at normal speed without any problem, you know you have a bad switch; cost for a new one: $10 online, $19 at your chevy part store.
If it doesn't fix the problem, well.... I guess I've failed to help you :). mea maxima culpa

IF it "sometimes works", it isn't the fuse.

Try pressing hard on the button..may be a switch.

May also be a wire in the jamb that has been stresed.

May be a short in the motor.

May also be the regulator binding.

This needs to be tested when the problem is happening.

well could be switch, motor or regulator. If your not able to use master to operate then switch not problem. So motor do you hear it run? if yes then regulator faulty. Need to remove door panel and see what's wrong.

Hi wonderwoman7474,

Go to previous posting on page 19 of the list. It is labeled "2001 Chevy Impala Power Window goes down but not up? Driver".
In a reply to this quote, I give instruction on removal and installation of the Drivers Side Master Switch.

Also, there is instruction for temporary repair of the switch if you are so inclined.
