Electrical problem 4 cyl Front Wheel Drive Automatic 40000 miles

Both Brake Lights do not work Plus Top Brake Light bar.

I have searched this site extensively and here is a list of what I have already checked:

Fuses: All good (under hood & under console)

Brake Switch: Good=Cruise control disengages properly and continuity check on contacts show one set NO and one NC working properly.

Light Bulb:Good=Visually OK, Continuity check. Beeps from side of light to either contact on bottom of bulb & beeps from contact to contact.

The Tail lights, reverse lights, Hazard, and turn signal lights DO work.

This is the wife's car and she reported that this morning the A/C would not turn on. It is working for me right now, but thought I should add that.

My fuses are not numbered, but counting left to right and top to bottom that puts me on "S/Roof". The one next to it is "Stop" (under console). I arbitrarily replaced both of these fuses to eliminate them 100%.

I already checked the brake switch and gave my results in the initial post. I don't have a drawing for it so I could only tell you how it responded to a continuity check. With the plunger pointing down it seems logical to assume the top contacts are N.O. For the brake lights and the bottom set are N.C. Contacts to unlatch the cruise control.

She had her battery changed by Auto-zone about a week ago. No way of knowing how long the brake lights have been out though.

I have a 2006 Elantra and my brake lights went out last night. Fuses and
bulbs are okay. I replaced the brake switch found at the top of the brake
pedal and that fixed the problem. It cost $12.97 from Auto Zone. Kind of a pain to get to but only took about 30 min to install. Hope this helps someone. - Dan

Here is a guide that can help as well. (below)

The most widespread Hyundai recall, affecting up to 531,894 2005-2008 Accent, Azera, Elantra, Entourage, Santa Fe, Sonata, Tucson, and Veracruz models, is NHTSA Campaign 09V122000. It is focused on a malfunctioning stop lamp switch that may prevent brake lights from illuminating when the pedal is depressed (the same switch may also cause them to stay lit after the brakes are released).

Owners of affected vehicles may contact Hyundai Customer Service at 1-800-633-5151, call the NHTSA Hotline at 1-888-327-4236, or visit SAFERCAR.GOV

If Customer Service tells you that your VIN number is not included in the recall, call NHTSA and file a complaint.

2006 Hyundai Elantra 4 cyl Two Wheel Drive Automatic 61,000 miles

My brake lights just stopped working. They were fine yesterday and not so today. Bulbs are good and the fuses are good since the other elements attached to those fuses (windows) are working.

Any ideas?

There is a brake light switch on the top of the brake pedal. Check to make sure it didn't come loose or is out of adjustment. If all is well, make sure there is power in to it (12 volts) and the same out when you hit the brakes.

Let me know what you find.

Inspect and test the brake switch at the brake pedal support-at the brake switch connector check for power at the red wire on the connector. No power there check fuse no.16 15amp.

2007 Hyundai Elantra

Brake lights don't work. Taillights work and signal lights light up but no brake lights. I'm thinking this is a fuse but have no idea where the fuse for the brake lights are. Don't have a manual. Can you help?

I believe they are under the dash on the driver's side. Also, check to make sure the brake light switch isn't out of adjustment. It's on the top of the brake pedal.

Electrical problem
2003 Hyundai Elantra 4 cyl Two Wheel Drive Manual 100000 miles

In the past few months, when I depressed the brake pedal, the lights on my dashboard would come on when the lights were off. Then today, I was told I had no brake lights at all. When I turned the car lights on - my brake lights would come on (though I believe one of my brake lights are burned out). What could be the problem? Also - my cruise control works sporadically - could this be connected to the brake light issue?

Hi dmabood,

If the brake lights and cruise controls are working intermittently, it could be a fault with the brake switch.

Turning the lights on would illuminate the taillight and not the brake lights. They are in the same bulb but a different circuit.

you may have wiring issues or the wrong bulbs or possibly a bad brake light switch, which mounts down under the dash on the brake pedal lever.
