ignition switch replacement?

You must get the ignition key reprogrammed into the car which most independent shop do for $130.00 this is because the RF chip in the key. Still cheaper than having them do the whole job

Is there anyway to reprogram the ignition switch with out having to go to a dealer to have the key and everything reprogrammed?

If you are replacing the ignition switch, no programming is required. If you are replacing the cylinder lock, they key would have to be reprogrammed. The other way is to match the key cylinder to the original key or you can dig the transponder out of the old key and bury it back into the new key.

Lost the key. took the ignition out. I'm turn the car on to start it but it does not start. the steering wheels unlocked. is there anyway I can bypass the security system so it'll start?

You need the key to start. You can call a locksmith to make a new key and program it. Much cheaper then going to the dealer.

Someone told me that I could put a remote starter on my car and I would not have to have the key. is there any truth to that ?

You will still need the key to unlock the wheel, I would just fix it correctly so you don't need to worry about it. Here are the instructions on how to do the job below.

I am tired of hearing people to tell me to turn my steering wheel left and right. My key will not turn in my ignition. I do not have my wheels cocked but more then a couple of inches to the left and have tried moving my steering wheel left and right. Initially my key had a little bit of trouble sliding in for a second then after I got it in it would'nt turn for the life of it. I am wondering if A: I can unlock my steering wheel manually somehow to see if it was a malfunction and engage my ignition to be able to turn. B: if not and I do need a new ignition since it is a chipped key do I need to reprogram the used Ignition,switch and ECU to the ECM by the dealership that I plan on buying since new is nearly $300

The ignition lock itselt is bad and the cheapest way is to get a locksmith to repair the lock, if the condition is not too bad.

Alternatively you can get a good lock and rekey slot to match the original, allowing you to use the original key.

If above 2 functions fails, you would need a key lock replacement with reprogramming of the PCM to match the new key.

Steering Lock Replacement

Remove the steering column.

Center punch each of the two shear bolts, and drill their heads off with a 5 mm (3/16 inch) drill bit. Be careful not to damage the switch body when removing the shear bolts.
Remove the shear bolts from the switch body.
Install the switch body without the key inserted.
Loosely tighten the new shear bolts.
Insert the ignition key, and check for proper operation of the steering wheel lock and that the ignition key turns freely.

Tighten the shear bolts (A) until the hex heads (B) twist off.

How to remove & replace?I removed set screw & push pin in,can get to slide 1/2 way out but is hanging up?

Disconnect the negative and positive battery cables and wait at least three minutes.
Remove the dashboard lower cover and knee bolster.
Disconnect the 5-pin and 7-pin connectors from under the dash.
Remove the steering column covers, remove the column holder mounting bolts and nuts and lower the steering column.
Center punch each of the two shear bolts and drill their heads off with a 3/16 in. (5mm) drill bit.


Do not damage the switch body when removing the shear bolt heads.

Remove the shear bolts from the switch body and remove the switch.


To install:

Install the new ignition switch without the key inserted.
Loosely tighten the new shear bolts.


Make sure the projection on the ignition switch is aligned with the hole in the steering column.

Insert the ignition key and check for proper operation of the steering wheel lock and that the ignition key turns freely.
Tighten the shear bolts until the hex heads twist off.

I do not wish to replace entire ignition switch with lock cylinder,just the lock cylinder,the tumbler with keys.

Yes, i understand that ..but these are the steps you must take to remove and replace the lock cylinder. The switch must be removed with the lock cylinder for lock cylinder replacement..

I have the switch W/ lock cylinder out of car laying in front of me,how do I change the lock cylinder

you have to drill the heads of the bolts off to separate the switch and cylinder assembly. then you must use new shear bolts to reassemble it.

For automatic models the switch with lock assy is to be replaced as an unit.

As the item is equipped with interlock switch, some parts are punched locked to prevent disassembly.

Assembly is not easy and might result in latent faults. I would advise replacing the steering lock assy.
