Gear problem

i want to know why some times when i start my engine while the Gear on P position it doesnt work on th eother hand i have to put it on N Position so it work !!

There is a switch called "park neutral safety switch" this prevents car from being started in any gear other than "P" or "N".

Either the switch is bad or the linkage to it is out of adjustment.
