What can cause a hesitation? Honda techs cant find it

the car hesitates when the gas pedal is pressed.
for example if i down shift to go into a highway when i get back on the gas, the car hesitates for a second and then it gains power again.

if i am in a hill going up, and i hold the gas down the car will have no power, it keeps going but with a 40% of the power.

the hesitation is highly noticeable in 2nd, 3rd, and 4th.

another example is when I try to beat the yellow light.and i hit the gas (with out shifting down)there is a hesitation as well.

I hope you guys can help me, the honda techs here in West New York, NJ are very bad.

If I release the gas pedal, and get back on it. the loss of power goes away (when going uphill)

Also, when idling if i hit the gas hard, I hear a "pssst" noise right before the RPMs go up.

If you do not have any trouble codes, then you need to read the live data to understand if anything is not functioning correctly. A bad O2 sensor can cause such symptoms. They might not throw codes but the working voltage could be at the extremes of the range.

After deleting those that I think are irrelevant as your scan tools might not be fully compatible with the vehicle and is picking up unrelevant data, there were mention of Bank 4 Sensor 4.

----MID:$01 TID:$87 - O2 Bank 1 Sensor 1 Test incomplete or dependant test failed

This is the only one that might mean something.

Generally the data does not show any iregularities so our attention should be going somewhere else.

Have you tested the fuel pressure?
Test the TPS performance.

Yes, TPS = throttle position sensor.

There is no bank 4 sensor 4 so I don't think that is relevant.

I did check the TPS and nothing seems to be abnormal. It reads all the time from 0% to 90% (90 being full T)

Now today the car got a lot worse, It had no power going uphill, it almost stalled in a red light (on top of the hill).

I also noticed that if I hold the gas pedal down when the hesitation happens, the car has no power, and it is like its running super rich.

I ran it around the corner with out the air filter to look for lack of air flow in the intake, It still low power.

Do you think that the CAT is going bad, anyway to test it?

Thanks a lot for your help.

Disconnect the cat and go for a test, that is the only way.
Did you test the fuel pressure? How do you nknow the engine is running rich and not excessive lean?

Btw which engine do you have?

With the scan tool get the ignition timing and see what you have.

I am only getting around 20 miles per gallon highway.
Can you advise on what I should look for on the fuel pressure and the ignition timing?
By the way, hot outside temps, affect the car a lot. Today i had no power, like going into a highway was suicide, the car had no power at all, when i hit the gas.

Thanks a lot man, I really appreciate it.

Our database does not have the range specifications but for testing, it is stated as more than 356 degrees than you have a problem so I don't think there is any fault here. IAT is with ambient temperature so it ranges accordingly.

Seems like the EGR is the one causing the problem. When it occurs, the ignition timing is retarded drastically.

Try unplugging the EGR and test if the problem goes away.

I have encountered EGR problems that does not trigger any trouble codes and so far cleaning and replacement (with used parts) the system did not solve the problem and I am still waiting for the owner to send the vehicle back for more testings.

The engine seems to hesitate at the rpm range of 1,200 to 2,500 at slow or constant throttle opening.

I disconnected the egr, and ran the car for 1 hr.
Results:

The hesitation still present
The loss of power improved (not as bad)
The check engine light did not turn on at all
the egr err 99.2% is not active any more. No egr err percentage is being displayed

Do you think that the egr valve is not closing properly and this is why i atill have the hesitation? Keep in mind that the egr err 99.2% is gone now that the egr is unplugged.

If i may add my 2 BOB's worth here... looking at the data in earlier posts, i would be inclined to replace the EGR as it appears to be reacting slow to demand, the actuator may be sticky, personally i don't much go for cleaning as it's very hard to ensure all the carbon is gone and and if knobs of carbon remain and dislodge, you can be back to where you started with a possible EGR flow issue, i am not saying don't clean it as a test mode, but if that looks to do the job i would be replacing to make sure.
