The check engine light was on in my 2004 Ford mustang. The code that came up was P0340. Which is the camshaft position sensor.
I would like to know where I can locate the the camshaft sensor so that I can install it my self. This will be my first time, so if you can give me thorough instructions as well please?

The car does start hard after warmed up. The left side head sensor is obvious behind the steering pump reservoir. The right side sensor is not in the same position. Perhaps The Chilton manual Ihave does a poor job of showing the location. It also does not confirm that the right side of engine is bank A.

Your Cam Position Sensor is located on the right side of the engine if you're looking at it from the front. It is a little black thing right under the valve cover.

you need to have the trouble code erased using a scan tool, removing battery cable does not work on newer vehicles such as this. the code is still stored even with battery disconnected.

I recently got a check engine light come on and scanned it and got the code P0340 which is Camshaft Position Sensor. So me and a buddy cleaned it and tested and ruled out the wires. So I came to the conclusion that itd have to be to the Sensor then, but I have read about the Alternator causing the problem with interference. How would I go about testing if this is the case instead of playing a guessing game and replacing the alternator & the Sensor?

the interference gets in by the wiring connectors insulation not being on correctly as long as it is insulated correctly there should be no interference .. try adding a little more insulation, clean sensor, clear codes and drive vehicle around to test ?

My 2002 Ford Mustang 3.8L mustang with 64,800 miles is having an issue with the Cam Positioning Sensor (CPS). While I was driving, it started stuttering, like I put bad gas in it. Then a few miles later the check engine light came on. I drove it straight to Advance Auto Parts and had them hook it up to the computer. The computer said it was the CPS. I tried to drive it the next morning and it worked ok then it started really stuttering. Literally felt like something was grabbing the pulleys/belt and stopping it then letting it go again. Eventually, it stalled completely and wouldn't start again for a few hours. After I started it would stall any time I'd stop. I replaced the CPS and it is still doing the stuttering thing anytime I go over about 1500 RPM's. I have checked the coils and all the cylinders are firing. What could the problem be?

Your engine has both the CMP and CKP sensors -check the crankshaft position sensor-when it stalls check for spark.

I replaced cam synchronizer and position sensor. I bought a tool set to align synchro but I don't know which one to use. There are four colors, gray, black, blue, and yellow. Which tool color is correct?

Only one of them will fit your synchronizer correctly. They may even be marked to what engine they are for.
