winshield may be leaking, heater vents not sealed among some of the reasons.

i suggest a glass shop that will find the leak.

the rugs will have to come out completely to dry this out.

Hi, I had exactly the same thing and it was always worse after Id washed the car and hosed off the tray where the windscreen wiper bolts come through. After drying the carpet many times I finally found the answer. If you pull back the carpets from over the front wheel arches you will notice a small rectangular hole on the side of each arch which is used to anchor either the carpet or wiring loom (I cant exactly remember as it was quite some time ago). I noticed that when I soaked the screen and the tray the water that ran down the inside of the wings was dribbling through this point. Ive not had a problem since this was sealed up. Its probably also worth sealing the gap under the cross member support just below the front of the front seats as this stops any water that gets into the front footwells making its way through to the rear footwells.

Forgot to mention that the smell may not go away by just cleaning the carpets and the soundproofing thats under them. The rubber soundproofing that runs up the front of the footwells (where you toes are when driving) has a heavy duty layer of soundproofing on the back. In our case this was soaked but you should be able to check by feeling just under the front edge. I ended up cutting this out as high up as I could as it looked like a major job to remove it properly and then washed it in the bath with some washing up liquid, it took ages to dry out but did get rid of the bad smell.
