and

Please run down these guides and report back.

When I shift from park to reverse, reverse doesn't engage and just revs. Drive and low work fine.

Good evening,

This sounds like either a clutch issue or a band failure inside the transmission.

I attached a flow chart for you to view. There are many possibilities but most of the time they are internal issues, not external.

Transmission problem
2005 Ford Explorer Two Wheel Drive Automatic 58000 miles

sometimes when i put my transmission in reverse it´s slams into reverse after 2 or 3 seconds, doesn´t matter warm or cold engine.
in drive it works normal altho sometimes i have the feeling/impression it´s doing the same only it´s a gently slam into the next gear

Has the trans been serviced? Also, are the u-joints tight and not worn?

Let me know.

nope, transmission is not serviced yet, something i'm thinking of to do soon now to see if problem dissapears.
Can't tell if U joints are (too) tight, tranny doesn't make a weird noise, it's normal.

Last night while paking the car the reverse gear failed to engage. This reoccurred this morning while taking the car out. Later, down the road, the car appeared to shift between only gears one and two.

Most time when reverse is lost, it has to do with a low reverse band that breaks. Have any check engine lights come on?

Yes, the "Check Engine" lights are always on. O/D (Overdrive off) lights starts to blink after a while driving. Also, "Check Transmission" flashed on once.

I need you to have the computer scanned for trouble codes. If the lights are on, there will be codes that will direct us to where the problem is coming from.

Most parts stores will scan the OBD 2 for free; however, the trans light requires a different type of scanner and I don't know if they will have it. Start with the engine light and let me know what you find.

If the check engine light is on, have the computer scanned. Make sure the trans fluid is full. Check to make sure the low reverse band is adjusted and not broken.

For the mirrors, check the fuse, and if OK, the wires in the rubber conduit that runs from the car into the door usually break inside that conduit. Is the light out on the shifter, or is the problem that the pointer does not move?

1.Remove the lower dash panel. 2.Remove the upper and lower steering column shrouds. 3.Place the range selector lever in the first gear position. 4.Place the range selector lever in the (D) position. This should be two detents from the first gear position. 5.Hand a three-pound weight on the end of the range selector lever. 6.Center the pointer in the middle of the (D) by rotating the thumbwheel on the PRNDL cable housing.7.Remove the three-pound weight from the end of the range selector lever. 8.Install the upper and lower steering column shrouds. 9.Install the lower dash panel.

The pointer is not electrical, it's a small chord that moves the pointer, something either broke or snapped off... The mirror is electrical, and like I said, is either a broken wire, bad mirror switch, or bad motor in that mirror. Or the fuse!

Is the shifter lever not going into the reverse position, or is it going in but just not moving? If it is not going into the reverse position from park, then it is probably a small electrical problem. If it is going into the reverse position, but just not moving, then it is more likely that your transmission is bad and needing at least a partial rebuild. If that is the case, you will have to have a transmission shop look at it and give you a quote on the repair (probably over $1,000.00).

My truck won't go into reverse. It is a 2002 Ford Explorer v8 automatic. Do you know what the problem could be and/or about how much it would cost to fix it?

if you have drive i would be thinking that it is a internal problem with the transmission, a scan may shed some light on the cause, but this will have to be check first hand by a trans tech as there will be special test equipment used to help with a full diagnoses.

do you think it is possibly a linkage problem or maybe a clogged trans filter?

Hard to say with out being able to inspect it first hand. it will not be a filter as you have forward with no reported problems, if it was a shifter problem you would have other shift related issues as well.
