What is an idler arm?
Is it part of the steering system or suspension system?
What is it's purpose?
What are symptoms that it is worn out or defective and needs to be replaced?
Is it critical to safe driving?

The idler is part of the steering, it is at the opposite end of the center track to the pitman arm. It is there to assure the center track rod moves through its arc. if worn, the steering will be vague. It is a safety issue.
