camshaft position sensor location and replacement?

CAMSHAFT POSITION SENSOR

REMOVAL
The camshaft position sensor is mounted to the end of the cylinder head.

Remove the negative battery cable.
Disconnect the PCV hose and reposition.

Cam Sensor/EGR Valve/PCV Valve


Disconnect electrical connectors from the camshaft position sensor.
Remove camshaft position sensor mounting screws. Remove sensor.

Target Magnet Removal/Installation


Loosen screw attaching target magnet to rear of camshaft and remove magnet.

INSTALLATION

The target magnet has locating dowels that fit into machined locating holes in the end of the camshaft.

Install target magnet in end of camshaft. Tighten mounting screw to 3 N.m (30 in. lbs.) torque. Over torqueing could cause cracks in magnet. If magnet cracks replace it.
Install camshaft position sensor. Tighten sensor mounting screws to 13 N.m (115 in. lbs.) torque.
Carefully attach electrical connector to camshaft position sensor. Installation at an angle may damage the sensor pins.
Connect the PCV Valve hose.
Connect the negative battery cable.

My engine light came on, machine check said cam shaft sensor. Car bucks like it is not getting gas or there is water in the gas. Seems to be worse when going uphill. I changed the sensor.....still having same problem. Machine check is still saying cam shaft sensor. Frustrated

first, a code number never identifies a bad part, just a failed system.

anyway, many issues with the wiring on these cam sensors being soaked with oil and the wires loosing there insulation and shorting together. remove the connector and uncover the harness about 12-14 inches and i bet you find this issue.

Fault codes never say to replace parts. The codes tell you which circuit needs to be diagnosed further. It's true that about half the time the sensor is the cause of the problem but you also have to look at the wiring and in particular, the connectors. Look for loose or corroded pins first. Next, perform electrical measurements at the sensor. How those tests are done depends on which engine you have.

Check the sensor's resistances, getting an input signal and returning it back to the computer-

I need HELP finding the camshaft sensor location. I have and need to replace the sensor but I'm having a little trouble finding it. Can anyone help?

i got a 2003 dodge stratus and the code turned out to be my cam sensor.changed it 2 times! i get to 2200 rpm and the car loses power and jerks.i turn it off then restart it and it is fine 4 a bit.some times it wont start after this problem happens so i have to shake the the wires that go to my cam sensor and it seems fine. please help.i need this car to get my son to school.

its a cam sensor and not a crank sensor ?
what do you have for codes ?

im not sure but the tec told me it was my cam sensor but i have changed it twice.sometimes i have to shake the wires cumin out of the plugin on the cam sensor and then the car runs fine for a little while

that is an indication of a bad wire and or connector

where is the cam sensor located

2.4 l it is located at the end of the head on the end of the cam

2.7 L it is located on the front of the engine at cylinder head

got a p0340 & p1400 code. timing belt is fine, car stumbles time to time. 3.0 ltr v6 , where the heck is the cam sonsor? nobody lists one. is it part of the distributor assembly? also, is manifold differential pres. sensor a fancy word for a map sensor?

A customer dropped off a 2001 Dodge Stratus With a 2.7L (Vin Code "U"). The engine was replaced by a shade tree mechanic. The engine they used was out of a 1999 Dodge Intrepid also with a 2.7L (Vin Code "R"). Their complaint was the vehicle only ran off spray. After having replaced the computer and reprogramming, replacing cranks sensor, cam sensor, flex plate and inspecting wiring we still have the same issue. All parts are mopar! We can unplug the camshaft position sensor and the vehicle will run (extremly rough) but only to 3,000 rpm's. Dealer says there is no difference in sensors between the two engines. Any insight as to what could be causing this would be much appreciated. As I have said before, we have used all factory parts on this vehicle. All Coil drivers are firing, The MODIS Shows we loose cam/crank signal as soon as we gain it.

Do you have access to Mitchel on demand? if yes go to 1999 Dodge Intrepid go to testing without codes go to introduction click on tips jake 2.7. If no your problem maybe T chain off due to wear cam and crank are not in sync at PCM goes into protect mode will not fire injectors. Unplug goes into limp mode and runs like crap.
Get engine on TDC pull #1 plug Then T cover to see cam position

I appreciate your insight...unfortunatly those are all areas we have already checked. Since posting this I have found the problem to be the "tone wheel" on left intake cam to be incorrect for our application.

Located at the end of the cylinder head, on the driver side. If you have the 2.0L SOHC, it has 4 bolts holding it. The other 2 DOHC engines have 2 bolts.
