My dads ignition switch went on his 2006 chevy ssr. It was still under warrenty when they replaced it. I got a feeling it went again because it won't start. battery is good and it is showing good voltage on the gauges. How do you replace the ignition switch on the ssr. If so could you tell me step by step on how to replace it. Also if you have pictures that would be helpfull to. Thanks for your help.

Its a common issue for those switches to fail causing no starts. They redesigned them 3 or 4 times. Is the security light on?

I was asking about the security light being on when it wasnt starting?Indicating a possible failure of the pass lock sensor in the ignition switch. Also the check engine light is on while the engine is running? Now the reduced performance light is on while driving?

No the security light wasnt on. It wouldn't start. When it did start. Thats when the check engine came on. Then my brother drove it back to work to get my mom and it was still running. Then he noticed the power failure light came on.

Sounds like the reduced performance mode light meaning there is a failure in the throttle by wire system. The first thing we need to do is have the computer scanned for codes thats are starting point.Let me know the exact code numbers you have. Not code descriptions.

ok when the truck gets here I will pull the codes off with my computer. My dad says it trys to kick over so I have had this problem before. Only with my 1992 cadillac deville I replaced the fuel filter and it still wouldnt fire off but it would turn over but not start. I found out that my ecc went bad. Could it be the engine control computer. Or maybe the fuel filter. Thanks so much for helping me.

my brother said it lost power meaning horse power. My mom said it went from 45 to 35 to 25 and then quit running. Could this be the throttle body.

Sorry about that i had it in my head you had a hhr.The code P1682 ignition switch circuit could have been set from crqnking it without it starting and the battery voltage dropping too low. There is a bulletin for that code setting because of that condition. The P0300 is random missfire the P0443 is evap purge solenoid control circuit. The P0102 is mass air flow sensor performance. The P0102 can be caused by the same reason the P1682 can low battery voltage.I would have the battery tested make sure the alternator is charging properly also make sure the battery cables are clean and tight. Also have a back pressure test done to make sure you dont have a plugged cat. That could set a random missfire code the mass air flow code etc.

Again you would have to have the abs codes read which most basic code readers wont do.Without seeing what codes are settingits hard to say.

Your best bet is to get the codes your setting rather then looking for a needle in a hay stack.

So I started the truck up this morning took it for a 20 minute drive ran good. Tried to start it an hour later engine cranked but it didnt fire off. I got the battery tested it was perfect. Went to get the alternator checked napa and advanced could not test the alternator. Went to the dealer told him what happened he thinks it is the throttle body. He said it is common on that truck. Ialso told him when you turn the ignition to start it you can let go of the key and the engine will still try to start he told me that it is fine that it is suppose to do that. I am going to shoot ether in it and see if it fires if it does does that mean the throttle body is bad. I also called another dealer they think it is that or the pcm or bcm. I have already experienced this with my 1992 cadillac devillle not a fun job. the one dealer is charging 650 to install it and the other is charging 500. the 500 dollar one seems like he knows what he is talking about. If I wanted to put it in how hard is it to do. Thanks for your help.

I took it for a 20 minute drive shut it off and I have started it 3 other times today. Any suggestions. If I find that the throttle body is bad I will order it from rock auto. Thanks for your time and help.

Ok so I cleaned out the airfilter and some other things The truck idels at 500 rpm which is good. Before I did that it was almost 750- 1000rpm. Before I cleaned the filter out when you started the truck and hit the gas it acts like it wants to die. It still does it after I cleaned everything out. Does this mean that the throttle body may be bad. Thanks.

It ran but it ran heavy. Now it runs smooth. But when you step on the gas and raise the rpms it sounds like it wants to choke.

But here are the codes again The code P1682 ignition switch circuit could have been set from crqnking it without it starting and the battery voltage dropping too low. That could set a random missfire code the mass air flow code etc.Thanks.

Thats what i said that you copied and pasted. While the engine is idling try lightly taping on the with a screwdriver handle on the mass air flow sensor see if the engine runs any different from doing that.
