Service Engine Soon - 2006 X4 4.4i

Back in December my 2006 X5 4.4i displayed "Service Engine Soon" light and went away after I turned it off and on again.

For the past week the "service engine soon" seemed to be coming on and off more frequently. I took the X5 to Autozone for engine check and I was told that there is a misfire for cylinders 5 and 6. The autozone rep told me that the spark plugs cost about $9 each along with changing the boot cable or something similar for about $14 each.

Right now I have 85000 miles on the car and purchased used so not sure if Spark Plugs were changed before. The vehicle is covered with a Maintenance Plan until 2012 but not sure if replacing spark pluges is covered.

Any input?

Hello,

After I droped my X5 at the dealership for checkup I got call from my rep with the following info:
1) they did a diagnostic going back to few weeks or more and they are able to see missfires on all cylinders. Not all cylinders are missfiring at once but the report shows that all have missfired at onetime or another.
2) I was told they did some kind of test to see if there is a problem with Intermediate Lever within the engine, but that test passed. My rep said in the past they have done this test on other X5s and some failed. He told to replace the parts could be about a $5000 job.
3) The Rep said that since all cylinders are missfiring and since the X5 has maintenance plan on it, he cannot justify changing the spark plugs under the maintenance plan.

For now they are going to reset the codes and try tomorrow morning to see if the service engine soon light will come on. He said to maybe we should replace the fuel filters at a cost of $159.00 and see if the problem is caused by fuel filters...which does not make since to me.

Any recommendations????

as an update to my post...since April of 2011 my service engine soon light never came on. It seemed that after the weather started to warmup the issues stopped. If the issue comes back again in the winter should I be pressing BMW to repair the issue for free? After all the issue seemed to be X5 not reacting well to cold weather.
