You can do a clutch stall test, star the engine and press in the clutch, select 1St gear and apply the handbrake hard, slightly increase throttle and lift clutch, if the clutch is in good condition it should stall the engine, if ther is any sign of slippage or smell, it will be time to fit a new clutch, but from what you have mentioned i would be thinking the clutch has had it!

mark(mhpautos) The car failed the test. My son went to volvo website and there are a lot of parts concerning a clutch repair which come to close to $2000. He went to partsgeek.com and they were a lot less. How can we find out before hand which parts he'll need. He has a friend that can do it and will be fair on the labor. One repair shop said it would be almost $1000 on labor alone! Can this be right? Let me know how we should go with the repair also. Any add'l ideas would be welcome too.

You will require a clutch pressure plate, a clutch disc, a thrust bearing and a spigot bearing, you will also have to get the flywheel machined, failing to do this may result in clutch shudder and decreased operational life of the new clutch, labour for this is about 8Hrs, doing it at home will take considerably longer, just be wary of cheap parts, you do get what you pay for, and the last thing you want is to be taking the box out again if something is not right.
