Check the level of the brake fluid in the master cylinder reservoir. If it is real low, suspect an external leak. If it is just below the "min. mark, add just enough to turn the light off, then have the brakes checked for wear. Do not fill the reservoir to the top. The fluid level will go up a lot when new pads are installed.
