I have a 2005 Tacoma 4x4 double cab v6 with 104,000 miles and the 4x4 is malfunctioning. About a year and a half ago the switch started intermidently working. When we start the truck and the 4x4 light is solidly illuminated then the 4x4 won't engage. If we start the truck and the 4x4 light is not lit up then the 4x4 works and engages fine. For the last year though, the light has stayed on and 4x4 won't engage. So, we took the truck to a mechanic. He said he didn't think it was the switch (which was what I originally thought it might be). He was able to get in there and manually shift from 2H to 4H and 4L and then he put it back together. He did some additional testing and thinks, but is not certain, that it is the actuator in the transfer case. He said it would be a $1200 repair. We didn't have the money to fix it so we said we would pick it up. When we got there he tells us that it is now stuck in 4H and can't get it out!?? So, now we can't even drive it. Any ideas on how to get it back into 2H?? Does this sound like a bad actuator? Any help is appreciated.

If he was manually able to shift between gears, then do it manually. Yes, problem is likely to be the actuator.
