Do I need to replace my engine?

I have a 2005 Toyota Camry with ~ 145K miles. The timing chain went out on it last week. The repairman at the garage said the chains should never break. Because it did, that indicates there's something wrong with my engine - a lubrication problem. I change my oil religiously every 5K miles.

That would depend on the damage caused by the broken timing chain. If it is too bad, a replacement would be a better idea.

What type of damage would not warrant an engine replacement? What damage would I look for that indicates the engine replacing?

If the broken chain had smashed the gears, oil pump etc, and cause damage to the valves due to pistons knocking against them, that would be major damage with engine replacement a better idea.

You would need to strip the timing chain cover to check.
