Hi 2CarPros,
My vehicle keeps shutting off when I stop at traffics, in the middle of driving, and making turns. It makes a loud clicking noise when I crank the car on and while driving. I was getting the noise several weeks prior to the shutting off issue. What do you think could be the problem?

Good morning

The first thing I would do is have the fuel pressure tested to be sure the fuel pump is doing its job.
Is the check engine light on? if it is do you know the code? if you do not, a parts store can read it for you for free. that will help us track down the area of failure.

where does the noise sound like it is located?

Hey Roy,

No check engine light is on. however, I do have to change my oil (oil change system check is on). I forgot to also mention that the car was leaking oil or transmission fluid very slowly for months. It was check by the auto shop the last time I had my oil changed but they could not see where the leak was coming from. I checked the level oil level and the thing is bone dry and what is there is black. I am guessing very low oil or empty from the dripping, but I never got a engine error code or indication from the panel or system check console. My drive way had spots from the dips for months and I am a shame that I waited until now to take a look under the car myself to see where the dip is coming from under the car. The noise sound like it is coming from (facing the front) the right side of the engine. Not sure if its the values, water pump, power steering, or crankshaft pulleys. I counted out the water pump, because it is not running hot and temperature reading on panel is consistent in normal range. have not problem is with steering (car turning smoothly). So, my last two guesses is the values and crankshaft. Also, at times I have a hard time getting the car out of the parking gear. Thanks for getting back to me quickly, let me know what you think. At this time I am going to lift the car up and take a look underneath to see if I can locate the dripping. I will check back later for your reply and let you know what I find.

Thanks again, Roy

okay, could be a valve lifter making the noise. change the oil and filter and see what happens.

What about the fuel pressure?

Hey Asemaster6371,

Just got the car back today from auto shop this is what they tell me. Fuel pressure is good and pump working fine. However, they check the oil and the car was dry; no oil, where did it go probably all drip out over time? No engine codes or indication of engine problem until now, right. What little oil that was still there was gray in color and with metal shearing, so they changed the oil; heavier grade 10w30, and drove it around some. Knocking noise still there especially when cracking the car on, not so much driving. But, it still shut off while driving, coming to stops, and some times turning. This happened while I was driving home from the shop. They cannot seem to find where the drip is coming from and there is a strong gas smell from the car exhaust while running. After all this, the best they can tell me is to buy a new engine, because of the metal shearing seen in the oil indicate some type of engine damage. Let me know what you think, and thanks again for your help. Oh, by the way I took the car to TirePLus where I normally get my oil changed and minor services.

Okay, with the metal in the oil, I am afraid they are correct. you will need either a new engine or a good used one.
