What can cause a rear main crank case shaft seal and transaxale case to leak?

I recently took my vehicle in for the crankcase pulley recall and they told me my rear main crank shaft seel and transaxale case are leaking. I bought this car 3 1/2 years ago when it had ~45,000 miles on it
