okay, ended up being mass air flow sensor. changed it today. car started and let run for 20 minutes. went back out to leave and car started but wouldnt stay running. sounded like it was breathing and then die. Won't stay running.

what was the original issue and was there a code??

original issue was crank sensor. changed timing belt and water pump also. then the code for MAF showed so we replaced that. Now idle when starting is very low and won't stay running.

codes never identify bad parts, just failed systems.

re check your timing marks. if you got one of the cams off one tooth it will produce these kinds of results.

would that happen just changing the MAF? We drove it for two days with the old MAF in and it was fine. just the engine light. Then we changed it. It will start and run fine now , but if you turn car off and then try to restart- that is when the "breathing" and low idle happens.

Try cleaning the throttle body and IAC. The idling speed seems to be too low and IAC could be dirty or stuck.
