Remove the belt from the alternator and turn the alternator does it have resistance if so its locking up-could be due to the alternator bearing. It sounds like you will need to replace the alternator. Here is a guide to help you step by step with instructions in the diagrams below to show you how on your car.

Check out the diagrams (Below). Please let us know if you need anything else to get the problem fixed.

2003 Hyundai Sonata 6 cyl Front Wheel Drive Automatic

Thanks for your attention. My car needed a jump yesterday morning. While at work I went out and started it up with some hesitation, with the start up.
This morning nothing...it clicks when I try to start it! The remote opens the doors, the lights and turn signals work! My neighbor tried to jump it and nothing, just alot of clicking...what could be the problem? I don't want the place I take it to, (Midas) to take me to the Dumb Cleaners because I don't know about these things.
Thanks, Kathy

It is very possible that it is your battery. Have someone check your battery terminals, making sure that they make good contact. If they are corroded, it is possible that you won't be able to jump it.

Take the battery out of the car and take it in to auto part store (Autozone, Checkers, Kragen, whichever you have in your area) and have them test the battery.

Once you get the battery back (or maybe a new one), read your manual, making sure that you follow the direction on how to reset your alarm. I have a feeling that your alarm triggered to "fail-safe" mode, when the battery lost power.

i have a 2003 hyundai sonata. while driving home, the battery light came on, my dashboard clock faded, then the radio stopped working, then all dashboard lights dimmed, airbag light came on, then my car started stalling and 2 miles later it stopped (died). When I tried to restart it, the lights flickered, but it wouldn't turn over. I retried 15 minutes later and it started, but then everything flickered and then died within 2 minutes. Is it the battery, alternator or something else? thanks for your help.

Where is the altenator located on a 2001 Hyundai Sonata 6cyl? Is it hard to get to? Do you have a diagram?

Refer to diagram. Not too difficult but is not a piece of cake. You need to remove the AC hoses and upper bracket.
