the shifter display indicates a different gear than the actual gear it is in

I have GMC Envoy SLT 4WD 2005 It Will not start , I noticed that The transmission indication on cluster is R while the actual Shaft lever is on P and locked. I tried to start the car or mover the transmission shaft lever both wont work. This happened when I came back from work . In fact I wanted to park my car infront my house then I used break to stop car and parked it. I wanted to move the trasmission shaft to park and stop the engine, I noticed the shatft lever move freely like it was losse then put it on P and turned off the engine and remove the car key. One hour later I wanted to start the car IT wont till now. please could you help

If the transmission shift linkage is loose or misadjusted, it may cause a no-start condition because there is a "neutral safety" switch in the ignition circuit. If the linkage is misadjusted and the neutral safety switch thinks it's in a gear other than Park or Neutral, it will not allow the vehicle to start. To get it started try pushing the gear lever "further" into park with one hand and turning the key with the other. But seriously consider having a reputable repair shop correct the shift linkage problem.

Thanks for the replay .I tried to push the lever further but noway to start the car. how can I move the shift trasmission lever while it is locked on the Park position . Is there anyway I can start the car .

In order to start the car, you may have to disconnect the shift linkage on the transmission. At this connection point, you should find the TR sensor (transmission range sensor). If you manually put the switch and linkage (on the transmission) into park, you may be able to get it started. This can be dangerous - especially if you are under the vehicle. Use wheel-chocks so the vehicle cannot roll, and if you need to raise the vehicle, do not get under it - under any circumstances - unless it is safely supported on jack stands.
