How many catalytic converters are on the drivers side of the 2005 Expedition? I'm being told that there are four converters on the vehicle, two in the front on both sides and two in the back on both sides I need to change them

clean oil off everywhere first to get a better idea of where it is coming from more than likely the cover and an axle seal. repair both .

Noises problem
2003 Ford Expedition 6 cyl Two Wheel Drive Automatic

My truck has 2. What is the expected life span of the convertor and would it be standard operating procedure to replace both if one is bad?

That depends on the engine and the fuel you've used. If the engine starts burning oil a catalytic converter can fail rapidly. Some fuel additives can also cause a catalytic converter to fail prematurely due to incorrect fuel/air ratio. Typically, cat. converters last the duration of the vehicle's life.

One of them was replaced when I bought the vehicle a couple months ago. Now the other one is making the same noise. Would it stand to reason the if one was bad that both would have been bad?

yes most likely both were bad, but my concern would be why either failed in the first place. a failing converter usually indicates an issue with the fuel/air ratio as i stated before. most commonly one or more of the oxygen sensors failing is the reason for the cat. converter to fail. is the engine light on?

could have slight misfire of engine due to weak spark plugs / wires. also ensure engine oil and coolant are not leaking. may want to test the oxygen sensors as well, even though engine light is not on.

I never heard of anyone that was successful cleaning them. They usually melt down internally when they go bad. I recommend getting a direct fit replacement.

Often the O2 sensor will show up due to other problems, parts sellers just aren't techs, you will have to look into the tune side of things leaky injectors, vacuum leaks, faulty plugs, leads any significant tune issue car cause an O2 sensor to go out of range and set a code.
