How many miles on it? I'm more inclined to think of a groove worn in the brake caliper mount and a warped rotor is making the caliper walk back and forth. That will make the pad's backing plate catch on the groove and snap when it releases. I wouldn't be looking yet at a cv joint until it has at least 150,000 miles on it.
Check the auto parts stores that borrow or rent tools to see if you can find a "Chassis Ear". Be warned, a lot of mechanics have never heard of it or even seen one. It is standard equipment that was issued to all Chrysler dealers but most people there aren't even aware of it. It is a set of six microphones, a set of headphones, and a switch box. You clip the microphones on at various suspect points, run the wires into the truck, then drive it while switching between them and listening. The newer version of this kit includes four wireless microphones so you can strap one right on the half shaft. If you're creative, you might even be able to attach one to the brake caliper.
