loud bang noise and my engine revved up like it was in neutral

Are you sure one of the universal joints on the drive shaft did not break? Also, when you put it in gear, is there any noise?

Thanks Joe for replying, the universal u-joints are intact and it is making a whining noise when it is in park and in all the gears but not moving. It seems like the noise is coming from the torque converter or the front of the transmission where it connects to the engine.

Welcome back. I have one more question. Does the speedometer show the vehicle is moving when it is in gear and not moving?

I am sorry. I should have asked that last night. If the speedometer is working and showing the vehicle is moving, the problem is most likely in the transfer case or a differential. If it is not moving, I suspect it is in the transmission.

Based on it being a transmission related issue, secure the vehicle so it cannot move. With the engine off and wheels blocked, crawl under the truck and remove the inspection plate where the flywheel attaches to the engine on one side and the torque converter is attached on the other.

Inspect the flywheel. Since you heard a bang, I question if the flywheel broke and is no longer turning the torque converter. At least this is a starting point. See if it is loose or you can turn the flywheel by hand easily.

Do this and let me know what you find. If the speedometer is not working (falsely) I suspect something broke between the flywheel and the output shaft (where the output speed sensor is located). If the speedometer works but the truck does not move, something has broken after that point.

Do this and let me know what you find. Also, if you have a scanner, scan the computer to see if there are any transmission related trouble codes stored.

Hey Joe, thanks for responding. Speedometer is not moving so I think it is the transmission or the torque converter. I am going to take it to a transmission shop. Once I find out the problem I will post it so it might help other people. I really appreciate your response, you and your family have a Happy Thanksgiving.

Thanks for replying, all the u joints are intact and it is making a whining noise in park, and in all the gears near the engine where the transmission bolts up to it. I crawled underneath the truck and I do not see nothing that is obvious.

Sorry I missed this one. It sounds like the transmission input shaft broken. Here is a video that will show you step by step how to pull the transmission. Your car will have a transfer case with I have attached diagrams for below.

Pull the unit to install a rebuild. Also, I would install a new radiator because the metal for the old transmission will end up in the cooler.

Check out the diagrams (below). Let us know what happens and please upload pictures or videos of the problem.

Thanks Ken, I will take it to a transmission shop next Tuesday. I will also get a radiator. Hopefully it will not be too costly. I will reply and post what happened.

Update on my 2005 Dodge 4 x 4. I had to have the transmission rebuilt, the spindle shaft was stripped in the torque converter. So I had them put a heavy duty torque converter which was $165.00 extra.
They also installed a line pressure booster which costed $81.00 the transfer case was okay. I had that serviced and the front differential. I got a two-year warranty the total cost was $2,939.00.

Do you think I paid too much? I don't have a lot of choices here in Roswell New Mexico It was the only reputable transmission shop. And the truck is in really good shape otherwise. I babied it and I bought it when it was brand new. So it's only money I've ever put into it after I was paid off.

It does sound like an uncommon event. Ken was on the right track with his diagnosis. I'm sorry to hear it was so expensive.

Honestly, it really differs based on where you are located. However, with the upgrades, it's not anything crazy. I don't feel it is out of line.
