seems to be a safe mode?

The crossfire sometimes goes into what seems to be a safe mode. In this mode not all gears work and you limp home and I gear too high. At other times such as now, it refuses to start. All of the obvious things have been chart such as battery, electrical connections, fuses etc. I know there is a method of overriding the safe mode, But I don't know what it is, and I don't know what brings it on i.e.: why does the car sometimes go into what I call a safe mode?

scan for codes first the transmission may have a wiring issue at trans.
