The alternator is making noise which was determined to be the rear bearing. A new alternator is $250 +/-. Would replacing the bearings be more practical? If so, are there any special concerns?

that depends on how fancy your Tahoe is, if it is fully loaded with all the accessories then it will use the 145 amp. if you clean off your alternator you will find the amperage stamped on it.

There is a belt tensioning pulley (on the opposite side of the engine at least on my 96 and 97). The parts store where you purchased the alternator should have the tool that let's you move this easily.

Yesterday I was driving my Tahoe and it cut off and would not start until we jumped it off. When it did start back up the battery meter showed that my battery was fully charged. The battery is two months old, the starter has been replaced a year ago, and the alternator is about 3 years old. I do not know what is causing this.

How do i remove my alternator?[/quote:25a4a8c392]

Hi Anthony,

First you will need to disconnect the Negative Battery Terminal. Then remove the Belt. You will then need to remove components as needed to gain access to the Alternator. Then remove all electrical connections on the Alternator. Then remove all bolts and nut holding the alternator in place. You may need to remove the brackets holding the alternator to remove it.

Remove the wires as described. There are just two long bolts holding the alternator. Remove them and CAREFULLY pry the alternator out. I know - it's in there tight - so pry on oit easy. It is sometimes usefull to have the new part ready to install so you can see where mounting bolts are....On your alternator there is NO belt tension adjustment to be done with the alternator.
