2005 Buikc Rendezvous Transmission
After starting the car and reversing out of parking space I placed the gear into Drive but the car didn't move. The engine only reved up. Same thing when I put it into 3rd. Into 2nd it moved and as the speed increased I could move it into 3rd and Drive and it engaged but when I would stop at the stop light I had to start back into 2nd. By the time I got to the dealer it didn't move in any of the forward gears and I had to tow it in. Dealer says I need a new transmission for $2,500. I can't afford that. Car is not in warranty.
I did have a growling/vibrating sound appear three or four months ago. I took it to the same dealer who said there was nothing wrong with the car, and that GM actually had a bulletin out saying these cars may develop that type of sound without any problems...
What should I do?

Based on your description, it sounds like the torque converter or front pump was starting to go bad when you were hearing the noises. If I had to guess, that is where the problem lies. What I would recommend is to have another opinion from a transmission shop rather than the dealer. If I'm correct, it will be much cheaper.
