I have a 2004 Volvo XC90. I am having problems with the brake shift interlock. I try to put the vehicle into drive (yes, I have depressed the brake) but it will not budge. I did disconnect the battery cable, and it "reset", but now it's starting to stick again. Is it possibly a fuse issue. I am not really mechanically inclined, so any help would be great. Thanks!

Did you check if the brake lights are working?

I have the schematic below. If brake switch is working correctly, the problem could be due to a faulty Central Electronic Module as you were able to make it work after resetting it.

First thing you may want to look at is the cable to see if it is sticking, especially if there has being some spillage? From the drivers side, remove the side panel on the center console. Once you have removed you will see the cable. Insert key and put to position 2, you should see the cable slide. Turn key off and it should slide back. Do that several times on and off and verify cable moves freely. If it does not, spray some WD-40 and clean up. Very common problem with spillage. Let me know what you find. Good luck to you.
