Hi I've just purchased a VW Polo 1.2l petrol for my son - its using oil and although I didn't notice when I bought the car, its definitely burning oil - blue smoke when the engine is revved hard.
I think it must be cylinder or piston wear - which I'm guessing will be expensive to fix - is it worth getting a garage to check and give a quote or should I just sell it on. The car runs very smoothly and if it wasn't for the oil problem I'd be very happy with it.

If it is engine wear what will it cost roughly to fix

Compression and Leakdown Tests can provide some information as to where the problem is.

Cost estimates vary between countries and even between local shops, so I doubt that any cost estimate I provide
will be of much help.

There are a variety of engine oil additives (here in North America) that can be added to the engine oil to try and
cure engine problems (noise, oil burning)... so you might want to try something like that first as a cheap alternative
to engine tear-down.
