I recently left the lights on of my car over night. the battery died so the tried to jump it. in my attempt to jump it the car would not turn over not even an attempt to turn over completely dead. so i assumed it was the battery. i got a new battery and installed it but it still will not turn over. i know there is power there because both the automated locks work and when the key is in the ignition the car dings. but, the widows, lights, radio, ect. do not work and the car won't turn over. i also thought maybe it was the ignition started but it wasn't. i checked fuses and didn't see a problem there either. any suggestions?

Ran a few errands with my grandmother the other day, after last errand got in the car to head home, car would not turn over. Lights came on, no crank or other noises. Thought it was the kill switch safety feature, so I locked and unlocked car again with key fob still didn't work. Battery was tested and is fine. Checked all fuses. They're all good. Let it sit for a day, tried to start again same issue. Any insights into what the problem could be?

Hello,

This could be a problem with your vehicle's interrupt relay located in the left side of your vehicle's dash.. I have included a link for you to go to down below:

https://www.2carpros.com/articles/how-to-check-an-electrical-relay-and-wiring-control-circuit

I have also included a wiring diagram of your vehicle's starting circuit and a diagram of the relay for you in the diagrams down below. Please go through these guides and test it then get back to us with what you find out.

Thanks,
A;ex

Hi Everyone, so it was the relay system and the battery also got drained as well. Had a friend work the system and change the battery. Subaru is good to go. Also had the alternator and starter tested both are still in good working condition. Thanks for the advice.

Cranks but no start condition:

Get a helper disconnect a sparkplug wire or 2 and ground it to the engine at least 3/16 away from ground -have helper crank engine over-do you have a snapping blue spark? If so-you have a fuel related problem,Do you hear the fuel pump come On when you turn key on? If not check fuel pump fuse and fuel pump relay if so, check the fuel pressure to rule out the fuel filter/fuel pump/pressure regulator and listen to the injector/s are they pulsing or hook up a noid light. No snapping blue spark continue to troubleshoot the ignition system-power input to the coil/coil packs, coil's resistances, distributor pick-up coil, ignition control module, cam and crank sensors and computer Note: If it doesn't apply disregard it.

Double check battery and starter motor connections-possibly a starter relay or ignition switch problem-also check the transmission range switch

There were 3 Engine codes, when I checked them, and one was for the Coolant Temp. sensor. I replaced the sensor and reset the (ECM) Computer, and also, fixed a loose spark plug wire on the Number 1 cylinder. Everything is OK now!

Hard staring when cold, was the initial issue. The issue with the starer not working was related to the ignition switch. One of the the engine codes, was for the ignition started switch. It will be replace when I get a new one, but in the mean time I am using the existing switch very carefully. I can rotate the switch (now 'out' of its original position) to a point where the car will start, but if I turn it too far, the circuit shorts, and nothing works! Again, I need a new ignition started switch. On a side note, If I have the auto., trans., shifter in anything but 'park' or 'neutral', I cannot start it! (I think I did this a few times) Duh!!!

Good to know you're most of the way back to trouble-free driving. It definitely sounds like getting that starter switch changed will solve a world of headache.

On the shifter setting issue: That's normal. It's a safety feature. It's called Park/neutral starter lockout or neutral safety switch.

Engine Mechanical problem
1991 Subaru Legacy 4 cyl All Wheel Drive Manual 143k miles
----------------------------------------------------------------
Engine turns over but will not start. Fogged intake with starting fluid, no response. Did not see spark between wire and plug. pulled codes by mating black connecters, got 11(crank angle sensor), 13 (cam angle sensor), 22 (knock sensor), and 23 (air flow sensor). Visually checked all the fuses, both places, looked O.K. pulled drivers side cam belt cover, belt appears O.K.

Without a crank signal you will never start it no matter what else is wrong chec the sensor, and if good check the wires to ECM and the ECM. If they check OK heres your flow chart for the ignition.

My Subaru was running rough, at idle sounded like it wanted to die, so I replaced the plugs. It has an after market air filter, so I cleaned that. Now with the new plugs, it won't turn over. First it sounded and smelled like it flooded, then it sounded like it was getting no gas. It backfired a couple of times and little spark came out near one of the plugs with a little wisp of smoke. It tries to turn over,, but no luck. I really didn't mess with anything other than change the plugs. It was at least running before now it's not, and misses and backfires when I try to start. I'm going to replace the wires because I noticed a small crack in the rubber cap. What could it be?

Check to see if you have a good strong spark, the coil may be suspect, if the spark is poor, the engine will still continue to pulse injectors and flood the engine, you will have to remove and clean the plugs again, as they will probably be fouled up.

It is possible but a failing fuel pump can do the same thing too.

Try checking for trouble codes.

scan the car for trouble codes. It could be a couple different things, so the best thing is have it scanned.
