my car went into garage 4 months ago for pump/injection repair , it was fixed but broke down when leaving the garage , legally he has to fix the car I know but should he supply me with a replacement if its taken 4 months and hes dragging his feet

You will have to check local authorities regarding this, check with local consumer protection authorities, here in Australia it is not mandatory to do it, some do some don't, it is just a matter of good will, some work shops don't have loan cars, this is just something that you will have to work out between the mechanic and yourself, but he should be doing all he can to make a speedy repair and get your car back to you.
