Usually you press the brake peddle while pulling the gear shift out of park. This does not happen
anymore, the car is stuck in park. Could you tell me what is causing this and how do we remedy this
situation, please?

Check that the brake light switch is ok, this will also activate the shifter interlock, you may also have to get the shifter interlock solenoid checked, if you have an owners manual there should be an over ride to release the lock, often there is a small hole near the shifter that if you insert a probe it will manually release the lock.
